Engine Fire!!!

Holy Hell! I just ran a few errands and left the car running the whole time. I get back home and pull in my driveway and I smell burning oil (which I have for a few days now) and I see smoke. I open the hood and theres a flame coming up from around the firewall/ oil filter area. I tore @$$ into the house and got a bucket of water. Doesn't look like any damage, but it's not going anywhere until I figure out what happened. What the hell happened!?!? I am freaked out and now all of a sudden want to sell this death machine! :surprised :hyper:

look for a shorted wire in the area of the flames.

total guess...

the oil pressure sensor sprung a nice leak. it's dripping oil on to the Y-pipe and you driving around got it hot enough to go on fire.

FYI the water thing was a knee jerk reaction...but if it's a true grease/oil fire look for something else other than water.

maxitech 09-20-2005 07:31 AM

Where is the oil pressure sensor? I'm about to go investigate this thing.

Directly below the oil filter...

maxitech 09-20-2005 07:52 AM

Well, guess what I found... A F***ING COTTON SHOP RAG DRAPED OVER THE Y-PIPE UNDER THE OIL FILTER!!! I had a friend help me do the control arm last weekend and I wouldn't have been that stupid. He's in deep sh!t!!! :flame: :chairshot

Greeny 09-20-2005 07:56 AM

Ahh man!!!...Are you sure he left it on the manifold???

holy crap... :run: :run: :run:

Matt93SE 09-20-2005 09:33 AM

step 1. kill your friend for leaving a rag on the hottest part of the engine.
step 2. fix the oil leak so it doesn't happen again.
step 3. remove all greasy rags from the vicinity of the car.
step 4. clean engine so it's not covered in flammable sludge.

Ok, so now my speedo doesn't work. Where is the sensor? If it isn't near the oil filter, then it must be the connecting wire. Or is it a cable?

The speed sensor is on top of the tranny real close to where the fire was....Probably burned the wiring and or harness to it.....If you find that to be the problem i can chop the wiring and harness out of my parts car for you...

maxitech 09-20-2005 02:29 PM

well, pulled the speed sensor and chopped out the burnt section - works fine now. On top of all this, I just took the Max to get the coolant flushed...Either the Kountry Folk running it didn't know how to use it or it "done broke" but I sat there for a half hour while they sucked the old fluid out, then put it back in, F***ed with the machine some more and eventually gave up after the hose in the radiator popped off and geysered green coolant all over me, them, my engine, and just about anything forward of the A-pillar...Sometimes I feel that rather than being a technical forum, this is more of a support group for when senseless sh!t happens that f***s up our cars! Speaking of support groups, I think I'll go meet my friends at the bar now. Good Day! :nupe500: :nutkick:

i'm sure he didn't do it on purpose. violence is purposeful and ignorant. just give him a good ear kicking.

maxitech 09-20-2005 03:01 PM

I agree, violence is senseless. I'm far more sadistic than that. I am going to get him blacked-out drunk, drive him at least 20 miles from town and simply drop him off!
