trouble starting when warm?

This started after I replaced my timing belt last week. The car starts fine if it hasnt been started in over an hour or so. It it's warm though, it will crank but not fire. I have to keep trying for a few minutes to get it to fire. Any idea what could be wrong? Last time it happened I'm pretty sure I saw grayish smoke waft up from the tailpipe.

hows it idle air control valve? id pull a plug or 2 and see how they look. mine was like that and i got 6 new free spark plugs and that helped, but changing my iacv with a spare fixed it up. I also cleaned it before i put it on.

Hmm, my idle is often inconsistant. Would that keep it from starting? When it does finally fire, i have to give it gas for a second or two to keep it from dying.

yeah, sounds sorta like the IACV.

Run ECU codes, could be a lot of things.

My guess would be CHTS. Seeing as it happened after the timing belt, you may have knocked the connector off/something. The CHTS is not used by the ECU when the engine is cold (closed loop)....hmm, i dont know. just a guess

Whats the CHTS?

Cylinder head temperature sensor, code 13 when u run the ecu codes.

usually if you look it up as a part it will be under coolant temp sensor. They are like $20 at NAPA. When mine went out, it did throw a code 13.

Yeah, you have to be careful to get the right one. There is a CHTS which is at the front of the motor and another coolant sensor.

Being you just replaced the t belt im thinking your timing is off a little...

Open loop is cold...closed loop is after warmup

internetautomar 11-18-2005 07:15 AM

the CHTS is what tells the car when to change "loops"

maximapitko 11-18-2005 07:18 AM

my bet would be water temp sensor like a few people above...
