Maxima's Gas consumption

I barely get like 200 miles per tank, sometime its like 170-180 miles..
is that too much?

how bout you guys?

internetautomar Oct 13, 2006 01:56 PM

mine did that when I had an exhaust leak

rmdl51 Oct 13, 2006 02:00 PM

I still have my exahust leak and I guess I have less than that :(

khemraj1999 Oct 13, 2006 02:02 PM

when i accelerate i hear kind of a hissing sound from the bottom of the engine..is that what u guys heard? or is that the normal sound of the engine

jaguax Oct 13, 2006 02:11 PM

When I start my car I hear a sprinkler.

 I'm sorry that's still the best quote I've ever read here.

I think I have the infamous broken exhaust studs on my VG, not only because it makes a very faint tick when accelerating, but because I see exhaust smoke coming out of the manifold. :nervous:

khemraj1999 Oct 13, 2006 02:43 PM

ok thats it!!! i'm taking my car to get the exaust fixed!! gas is way too expensive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*wonders how much it might cost to fix*

i know who wrote that.... :hide:

Cliff Clavin Oct 13, 2006 05:38 PM

usually it is exhaust related. I know that a bad o2 sensor will kill your mpg, too.

Tom Oct 15, 2006 04:50 AM

I get about 280-320 miles per tank.

Get it looked at.

goon9 Oct 15, 2006 05:00 AM

I had less than 200 when I got it. After replacing my bad 02, replacing exhaust studs, and cleaned intake manifold. I get atleast 300 now.

how much did all that cost you?

I did it all myself, so the only cost was parts.

The O2 I think i paid 90.

Studs were $70 (including the Vermont Right Angle Drill atatchment And bits)

When I cleaned the intake manifold. I actaully removed it and scrubbed it out and bought upper manifold gaskets. I donno what i paid.

Hollywood! Oct 15, 2006 02:47 PM

never less then 315. i guess im running well then

khemraj1999 Oct 15, 2006 02:52 PM

sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet

NineOhSE Oct 15, 2006 03:20 PM

I get around 370 with around 2 gallons left in the tank (I mostly do highway driving, but i drive hard) I also have a weird noise comming form the passenger side of the engine.. i have no clue what its, but it hasnt had any negative effects.

khemraj1999 Oct 15, 2006 03:54 PM

i'm personally feeling bad now...as soon as i'm finish with my sound system i really have to put some money into the engine :(

Oooo sad. Sound can wait.

khemraj1999 Oct 15, 2006 06:30 PM

i know, but i already started on it. So in a week i should get the headunit, wiring harness. After that i need to balance the tires and i'll fix my exaust leak. After that then i'll try to change plugs and give her a tune up..change o2 sensors. I need my car to last me for atleast 2 years more then i'll be able to upgrade to a newer car..MAXIMA!!! maybe a 2000 or newer..but i'll still keep the 94 i love my baby!

Duckman540i Oct 15, 2006 07:50 PM

I'd say replace your fuel filter as well. I did that at 215,000 miles, and there was a huge difference! You can get a brand new OEM one from Bryan (Internetautomart) for $5 shipped. Definentely something to look into.

does it sound like a sprinkler by any chance?

I guess it does somewhat sound like a sprinkler. At first I thought it was the rotor hitting the distributor cap but that wasnt it. I can't quite pinpoint where its coming from though. You got the same problem?

khemraj1999 Oct 16, 2006 01:51 AM

how about if you smell alot of gas when u stand at the back of the car?

maximapitko Oct 16, 2006 07:34 AM

I am getting 22mpg (90% highway) which is not cool. I was always in the low 30's with my 5spd vg. I'll be tuning it up here pretty soon and I really hope it gets better.

Make sure you check the bushing wear on your control arms before you do an alignment. A little wiggle will throw it off and start wearing your tires like you wont believe.

thanks i'll make sure i let the mechanic know before i let them work on the alignments.

rmdl51 Oct 16, 2006 02:58 PM

I wish I could fix the exahust leak myself, but I have no place to work at and no experience at all, I have no idea how much I'll have to spend if I want to replace the whole line, I WTB the WS Y pipe also, I wish I knew someone to trust for this kind of jobs, anyone know about how much money to get this done?

adriena Oct 16, 2006 03:04 PM

i get okay gas mileage but i have a back knock sensor and o2 sensor some mechanics told me this lowers my gas milege. is that true?

YZFR1Tim Oct 16, 2006 03:14 PM

i get about 26 on the hwy with my 02. but it varies, some days its 24 with same speed.

a bad o2 will lower fuel economy.
a bad knock just makes the car sluggish at lower RPM

regarding that bad knock, i noticed a few weeks now that my car has been taking longer to pick up on speed. i have to mashdown a bit more on the gas...is that something to do with bad knock?

not likely. the knock sensor is more of a VE issue than a VG issue.

khemraj1999 Oct 17, 2006 04:06 PM

ohhh ok :)

What about the excessive smelling of gas?
