check the fluid level first. no fluid = no pressure. if it's low, put more in. pump the pedal a few times. if it's got a slow leak (mcyl or scyl starting to go) it'll kindasorta self-bleed and will last a few days before it's empty again. if it's got a blown line it'll shoot out and never build pressure. if it does build pressure, park on something that will reveal a puddle if one is made.

reverse is a straight-cut gear that engages when a small idler gear slides into place. rolling 1mph forward and trying to shift into reverse (with clutch pedal working fine) will result in grinding sounds.

all forward gears are synchronized and pre-meshed, so rolling 1mph backwards and shifting into 1st will behave just like you shifted into 1st while at a dead stop. It just puts a tiny little bit more wear on the synchros to put it in 1st when rolling backwards, is all.

if you can watch while someone else pushes it, to see where it's coming from, it'll be pretty easy to see where it's coming from so you'll know what to replace.

also it might last a day or two per fillup if it's dribbling a drop or two at a time.... won't last long at all if it's squirting out.

I would just rebuild it, it's cheep and easy and even if you got a used one your going to want to rebuild it before putting it in.

yea i didn't mean to suggest to just leave it as it was. but if you can't replace it until the weekend then you might be able to buy a big bottle of brake fluid and make due until then. my friend's Probe w/ the leaky SCyl is about to be retired so he's just topping it off every week until i put together his maxima for him middle of september (the white 89SE 5spd). then he'll join Maxima.org and everyone will be happy.

Foud one at autozone for 30 bucks, but my credit card is actin up. so im going to make an attempt to buy it when i get paid.

and plus, i wouldnt wanna try, since i do ALOT of daily driving, to me, it wouldnt be worth it. 100+ miles per day, you do the math

haha yea that many miles/day you'd pay more in fluid than you would even waiting a few days.. you'd need a whole bottle each day at that rate

now that this is done, its shifting like butter, but shifting into second AT TIMES feels really crappy, and sometimes when i downshift, it feels as if one of my mount need to be changed. anyone have similar problems???

double clutching tends to work the best for down shifting, I think, and be sure to check your gear lube it does need to be changed from time to time 60k irrc it does make a difference, other then that it's a old car and will have some quirks, and mounts isn't a bad idea.

i doubleclutch from 5th to 3rd always. try to from 3 to 2 but the rhythm isn't always as second-nature as the 5-3 is.

get one at kragen/shucks/checker instead of autozone. I think they might be cheaper, and parts are usually higher quality there. I bought a slave there and replaced it (super easy job, just make sure your REALLY tighten down the bolt where the fluid comes through the lines and enters the slave) and it's been perfect.
