Passenger side front window won't move

I have a 91 GXE. The front passenger side window is dead. I don't know if it is the regulator or the motor or both. I had to manually pull the window up and there is still a small gap at the top. Is there anyway that I can figure out before taking off the door panel what I need? Also, if it is the regulator, is that difficult to install myself or should I have it serviced?

Thanks for your efforts,

TMC

Can you hear the motor running when you press the button? If so then it is deffinatly the regulator. If not then you can't really tell until you take apart teh door. Sometimes the wire can bind up so tight that the motor can't spin the drum so you won't hear the motor running.

Also...

This is something almost anybody can do. Taking apart teh door is pretty simple and taking the regulator out just involves like six bolts and a couple of screws.

I can't hear the motor. When I take off the door panel what do I check next?

You'll see the regulator with the motor attached to the bottom of it. There is a wire that controls the window going up and down. The design flaw is on the piece holding the end of this wire. It breaks and teh wire gets tangled up around the little drum attached to the motor. You have to take out the regulator and motor as a unit. There are two bolts on the top and bottom of the regulator holding it to the door. There are two bolts holding the glass to the regulator. Once you get it out there are two or three screws holding the motor to the regulator, be careful with the screws as they can be really tight and can strip.
