Floor mode doesn't work right on a/c

Now that it is getting cold I found a problem I forgot about. My a/c all works normally except when you select floor. It blows on the floor and defrost. If I select floor and defrost the air flow increases slightly to the defrost and blows on the floor still. So the only one that dooesn't work right is the floor mode. I am thinking a door or something isn't closing all the way. I tried looking under the dash to see if something was binding but didn't see anything.

It makes no difference, the vent mode is controlled via motor on both systems.

I'd try a different control unit first, if that doesn't work, there's probably a hiccup at the mode door which means you might need to replace the motor or make adjustments. It could actually just be out of adjustment, there's a rod that clips with a plastic deal that needs to be adjusted properly. I've never had to adjust that door so I can't tell you exactly what to do, but it's in the FSM. Could also be an internal problem.

I tried reading the FSM and there is an adjustment section but only seems to apply for the auto a/c which i don't have. I was thinking my control head was bad, but wouldn't it not do anything when I press the floor mode if it were bad. Can someone put their's in floor mode and take a shot of all the arms under the dash? If so this would be great so I can compare and see what position mine are in. BTW i read the FSM and I know the control head doesn't come out that easy. It sits behind the dash mounts. Any tips?

"It" has to move when "exercised" via the button. Does "it" try to move? ...translated: "does it even try to move"?

Peek under, use a flash...

If not, measure the switch with a dmm (replace the sw as necessary) and/or find another driver module.

yes it moves and air comes out the floor but comes out the defroster too, It is acting like there is a door that isn't moving completely.

Maybe the door has been disintegrated from the axle. I'd try to cut a hole in the side and try to repair without taking all out... later plug it back with some hardening sealant like sikaflex (www.sika.com).

This pic can be found in the FSM

i have a fsm too.
there's a section for the manual a/c control.
and according to it there's supposed to be a certain amount of air that comes through the def. vents.

when you select def. only does air come out of the def. vents only?
does it sound like the motor is having a hard time movin the doors?

gapboi210 Nov 21, 2008 09:51 PM

no everything seems to be moving normally. There is almost more air coming out the defrost than the floor when on floor mode. has to be a door not closing all the way

1992maximase30 Nov 22, 2008 06:58 PM

i dunno if you looked under already.
but if you have'nt look up under there i think the top lever is the one for the def. vent.
when i seen mine the lever that moved it was kinda coming out of place.

thanks much appreciated now i can go look and see where mine are setting

Well I checked and mine are all in the same position as yours. So I disconnected the plastics arms and moved them by hand and everything seemed okay. Then all of a sudden it would not go into recirculate mode. I pushed the button and nothing. So I thought I might have a bad head unit. I tore the dash apart to get that thing out. Thanks nissan you had to make it where it mounts backwards behind the dash. I connect my spare head unit and its the same thing. So I then plug my old one in and fin the recirculate servo and door and give it a smack and it starts working. It stuck a few more times so I greased it up and it seems to be working okay. Maybe next time I am at the JY I will grab a spare. It looks like it may be a nightmare to replace with it being tucked up the dash. I put everything back togethere and I will leave it be. I can live with some air coming out the defroster when it is on floor mode. It seems very easy to break something or get something out of wack and end up worse than I was before.

LOL, try taking a climate control main unit out of a second gen. Not only is it reverse mounted, but there's a metal plate over the screws that hold it in or something ridiculous like that. 3rd gen dash is simple to dismantle, the FSM tells you how to remove the control unit..it says to do the same thing the girls tell me: push, angle unit and pull out sideways.

gapboi210 Nov 29, 2008 05:42 PM

yeah that doesn't work because you can't get to the two cables that are connected to the temp and fresh air lever
