Ignition Upgrade for VG
Got the oil filled coil and Mallory Ignition control box today ...trying to get all the brackets fabbed up for the coil and the ignition box... Got pics of the coil so far! That puny epoxy crap... is a gonner, Im trying to burn whatever is in there....without that intermittent behavior before the coil goes out! These Oem coils will test fine but bog and misfire when they reach near the end of thier service...

Thats nice man. I'm ordering things now. I got my block back today and my ported out exhaust manifolds from Aaron. I'll post comparison picks of my stock vs his on my home page. Major Difference! Will order more suspension stuff now.

This thread makes me wonder if its my Coil pack that is causing all my misfire issues. Since my injectors all test out a-ok.

You don't have coil packs. You have a distributor and an ignition coil. Replace the distributor cap and rotor, plugs, and wires and report back.
Looks good let us know how it runs! |
The epoxy coils normally miss in under load conditions like during part throttle acceleration...

my car has always had a little bit of a stumble at like <5% throttle. less noticeable with the automatic tho. now with the manual it's hard to feather the throttle with it sort of gently stumbling and bucking a little bit. not nearly as bad as a dead-injector misfire tho.

You can fix that with one of those $26-$40 Msd/ Accel/pertronix traditional oil filled coils! I did this to my 86.5 D21 Hardbody 6-7 years ago and it's never had any more coil problems! It's like about whenI was a kid I never saw my dad or uncle change an oil filled canister coil because it started misfiring. I saw them change one cause it was leaking oil and the rest were for higher perf coil (hotter spark) setups, and this was on big block Mopar V-8's.

About how much does that coil cost, and where can you order one from? Is the setup easy?

Yesterday I fabbed my control box bracket and Intake system heat shield Saturday and wow! I'm really happy how it came out. I wanted to place the ignition box in close proximity to the distributor and coil but, the instructions stated to mount the box as far as possible from the distributor! So since I've been relocating the battery to the trunk and there was going to be plenty of air moving around the air filter I choose that location! So my heat shield is double dutied, protecting my control box and aiding in lowering my intake temp! I will shoot some pics when my camera is returned from my niece!:) |

looks great...any thoughts of fabing that heat shield for org members?
|
You would have to relocate your battery to the trunk
