Speedometer acts like tachometer
I have an unusual problem on my 91 Maxima. When I start the engine, the speedometer needle moves in parallel with the tachometer needle, rising and falling with engine speed. Once the car begins to move the speedometer will behave normally until the next time I switch off the engine, then it will do it again on restarting.
It's intermittent and doesn't always do it, but it's getting worse.
Any ideas?
Also where's a good place to find pictures and instructions on dismantling the dash?

I believe there's a write up somewhere on taking apart the dash if you do a search. It's not too difficult. It's all phillips screws. Take the dash off the bottom of the steering column, the plastic trim around the steering column to make removing the cluster a little easier, the plasic trim with the switches, the trim around the deck and the shifter trim then the trim with the clock and vents around the cluster. Check the 3rd gen classifieds if you need to find yourself a cluster i think there's a couple there in the classifieds and i think a member here even posted a video on youtube showing the dash dismantle needed to swap the cluster if im not mistaken. Just take your time so you don't break any trim pieces unless your going to get a cluster from your local yard then you could get practice or learn on a scrap car before doing your own.

You could just replace the speedo but you may aswell just replace the cluster with a known good one just plug n play. Doesn't sound like it would be the speed sensor that plugs into the tranny if your having the issue at start up while the car is in park. If you have the gxe you could also swap it out with the se cluster which is a nice touch with the black on white during the day and white on black after dark. If your going to swap the cluster its a good time to change the bulbs aswell for piece of mind. I swapped mine out with LED's which are nice and last longer than the halogens. If you decided you want to swap the bulbs they're 194's just so you know.
