Need Help!

I have a 1993 Gxe that i purchased about 4 yrs ago, I'm having a problem with the (Shift Pattern Select Switch) which is located near the gear shifter inside the vehicle. The problem is that the light doesn't come on for a few seconds when i start the vehicle, when this happens, the transmission seems to be stuck in 1st gear and does not change gears once driven. Does anyone know what may be the problem/fix for this issue?

Yes, that’s the light.

hmm i had a similar problem years ago where mine wouldnt start, it ended up being the shifter bushing under the car. its like $2 from Nissan and takes 5 minutes to install under a heat shield under the car, my shifter wouldnt go into park fully and it caused no cranks

so is it permanently in first gear or can you get into park and reverse?

I hate to say it, but these cars are never reliable until you do a manual swap. Of course someone will say this is not a fair statement since these cars are all well over 20 yrs but they will run for many more years with the manual swap. I am getting ready to do my 5th swap.

That's awesome, I wish I knew someone in my area who could do the swap on mine.

the problem was the auto trans in GXE was made for 4 cylinder engines, doing stupid stuff like shift R-D and D-R while moving, launches, etc with them they wore out quickly. if you did alot of highway driving with them and took care of them, they could last. mine went to 430,000km only going through a shifter bushing before 1st started slipping
