went to the drag strip tonight, i'm a little disappointed

went tonight, i'm a bit disappointed with what i was runnin. first off, i'll give the conditions and setup and you guys can critique if you want.

weather: the high was 51 degrees, drizzle on and off, cloudy and overcast, windy

Car setup: trunk empty, 205 55 15" dunlop SP5000's up front, my 17's in the rear (i was too lazy to switch all of them) i had about 25lbs in the tires up front.

ok my times:

RT:.847
60': 2.248
1/4 ET:14.917
MPH:91.43

Missed 3rd on this run
RT:.835
60': 2.293
1/4 ET:15.234
MPH:90.53

RT:.852
60': 2.312
1/4 ET:14.858
MPH:92.58

ok now i'm bracket racing. oh, i made it down to the semifinals. there were 4 cars left! and i redlighted my last run!!! GRRRRRRRR I dialed in a 14.8 the track was slower than earlier too. I don't know why, but everyone was adjusting their dial in times.

RT:.769
60': 2.290
1/4 ET:14.838
MPH:92.00

RT:.838
60': 2.354
1/4 ET:15.004
MPH:92.00

RT:.658
60': 2.270
1/4 ET:14.964
MPH:.91.67

RT:.595
60': 2.361
1/4 ET:14.957
MPH:91.85

RT:
60': YEAH, i redlighted this one :(
1/4 ET:
MPH:

i think i can squeeze .1 or .2 out of the car still. I didn't really have any GREAT runs. with the tires up front being so short, i have to shift into 4th. it really hurts. anyway, i'll try again when conditions are a little better. . .

Those are good times. Check the 5th gen forum and see what some 2K2's ran today ... I ran a 14.8 in an Auto 2K2..

flyry110 May 18, 2002 11:45 PM

yeah, there was a 4th gen with intake, exhaust, and suspension, oh extremely light rims with VERY aggressive tires, and he was running 14.6's. kinda disappointed LOL.

not to make excuses, but the track was slightly uphill, and i'm having to shift to 4th. i know that's what's getting me. next time i run i'm gonna pull my silencers in my exhaust as well. I left em in. I'm gonna also put the 15's all the way around, instead of just on the front. I don't know if it'll make a difference or not, but every little big counts i guess. . . .

What were your shift points and 330', 1/8 ET/traps? I know from Matt's dyno that you should hold 3rd gear unless you are hitting the rev limiter. I did some quick test runs with cartest with stock tires and your 205-55-15s. Cartest shows that with the 55s you should run 1 tenth quicker and trap 1mph higher than with stock 65s. However the extra 1mph comes from finishing the 1/4 around 6500-6600rpm. At your power level 55s might not help you as much as say a 4th gen since you have better power up top.

EDIT: Do you have a Y pipe? If not your running good times for just I/E/UDP. The ECU + Y pipe should have you trap around 94-95mph assuming you don't lighten the car.

flyry110 May 19, 2002 08:12 AM

yeah, i've got a Y pipe, i was hitting the rev limiter in 3rd so i would shift 4th, but i don't understand why the traps were so slow. . . .

Sith May 19, 2002 12:29 PM

hey flyry how do you launch now with your lightnened flywheel?
i still cannot get under 2.4 60 ft times. It's ****ing me off. My best run so far is only a 15.7
My fastest MPH so far has been 89.50mph so the horsepower is there to hit a 15.0
once you hit 90mph you wanna shift to 4th. That's what matt told me anyways.

Are your Ignition coils original?
Is your timming advanced a couple degrees?
Has the knock sensor ever been cleaned or replaced?
Just a few things to suggest, cause it sounds like you might need some tune-up work.

Sith May 19, 2002 03:22 PM

Everything is original except Clutch Flywheel and STS.
Knock sensor has never been clean or replaced that i know of. And i do think it needs a tune-up.
Where's the Knock sensor. And the PCV? i think i know where the PCV valve is but i'm not even going to attempt it if it's what i'm thinking of, on the back of the engine right up against the firewall.

Actually I was refering to flyer, but it'll apply to anyone

yeah, the pcv is against the firewall, but if you use a long extension it will give you the proper angle and leverage to remove it easily just remmeber to use antiseze grease on the thread when installing.

Knock sensor is my next project, unfortuantley the gaskets are very!! expensive, you need two and the best price I can get is around $50 (a piece), that is for the intake maifold, and also the intake colector gasket is required (but thats cheap).

whats the PVC? i probably know but dont. does that make sense?
thanks

I like my gtech :) saves me money although I think some of the neighborhoods around here are catching on to my 80-100mph runs in 35mph zones. hmm i think im going to use the on ramp now on :)

Who needs the accuracy of a track!?!? Ghetto tech to the rescue boiiiiiiii

Dummy May 19, 2002 05:33 PM

gtech is very inaccurate.

maybe but not if you know the degree of it :). i always do my runs in the same place so that keeps it better along with that I always "tune it" in the same place, it helps.

i wouldn't consider .1 to .3 tenths off inaccurate...

I meant PCV, positive crankcase ventilation.

ohh now im getting all excited, its a computer modding thing, i hear the something related to cooling and ideas start running. hehe, how many people here can say that theyre computer is watercooled?
MrGone

ohh just got an idea, use a maxima radiator in my system. maybe Ill make a"Maxima" computer. ohhh, im getting ideas now..... to the batcave.

flyry110 May 19, 2002 07:21 PM

i was disappointed. i ran a 15.2 with a few mods, but that was at a better track. I'm hoping to shave another 2-4 tenths off next time out. i gotta figure out gearing and stuff. . . . i have people raising the BS flag on other forums. about my 14.8!!!!!

as far as the flywheel goes, i was dropping it at 2300 or so and was getting pretty good 60' times. thing is, i had REALLY skinny tires on. I know with sticky wider tires i could drop at a higher RPM and get better times.

Shadow1198 Jun 2, 2002 07:55 PM

14.8!!! Great job Flyry!

94Max Jun 5, 2002 09:45 AM

RT's of .838, .847, .852..... I think I see the biggest bang for the buck for ya... :)
