Need speaker advice
 

I installed a Sony Deck, Infiniti Reference add-on Tweeters on top of my doors and replaced the rear speakers with some Kenwood 3-ways couple of years ago. The rear speakers sound terrific when you sit in the back seat and I have nice imaging up front with the tweeters mounted high.
However, I was lacking bass. This weekend, I made some adaptors out of wood so that I can fit the 6.75" stock speakers that I had left over from when I installed the rear Kenwoods.

So here's my impression. It doesn't sound a whole lot different (perhaps the bass got just a tad better), but it seems like I lost a bit of imaging in the mid-frequencies as I noticed that the stock front speaker pods tilted the speakers up so that the sound was at least pointing towards your knees, bit at your feet.

So here's the dilemma.

1) Should I just order some nice 4X6 speakers to get the little bit of imaging back and run my stock speaker pods again? Only concern I have doing this is bass response

2) Should I order some nice 6.75" speakers and mount in the pods I made?

Is there that much noticeable difference in bass between a 4X6 and a 6.75" speaker?

Here's my advice: Get a dedicated sub and highpass the rear speakers, so that you don't blow them when you are trying to get base.

However, from my experience, everyone prefers circular speakers to oval speakers when it comes to sound quality. This is why you never see component speakers sets that aren't circular. For this reason, I am going to put in some 6.5" in the rear and build some small enclosures for them.

thats good advice. get some nice 6.5's on the rear deck. run your interiors for highs and mids and buy an amp and a woofer or two. if your not bass hungry, one twelve will be fine for that extra bass. but if you want to bump, definately go with 2 or mabe even 3 12's. i had one fifteen in my trunk for a while and that was plenty of bass. i personally like the sound of 2 12's better. one 12 and a woofer for that wont be too expensive and is a simple install for a DIY job. good luck

Yeah, one 12" is PLENTY if you are just looking for music enhancement.. Hell, a 10" will work if you want to save space. Plus, you can get a cheap, non major brand Amp for casual base applications (non competition) that will put out 100-200 watts for cheap.
