What does your car sound like?
I am new to this website, forum, etc. I am getting a 1993 SE. I am interested in letting it breather better, and wondered what the various set-ups sound like. Is it possible to post sound files somewhere, with short descriptions as to what mods were done?

not sure if these still work, but this is my 91 GXE with WSP Y-pipe, stock catback with Dynomax muffler and JWT intake....(its a little louder now with 2.5" catback and new muffler)

mine sounds like a beast...

mines a deep rumble at idle but starts wailing once I get on it. I guess the best description of a modded 3rd gen would be a Honda on steroids. It's a little ricey at times, but pretty deep. Or at least mine is.

Does anyone have, or is it possible, to have a relatively quiet car (a bit deeper sounding than stock, but not much louder)when just cruising around, but when you pop it down a gear and stand on it, to have all hell break loose. What I am looking for is one that is a sleeper until you want to wake it up.
Thanx |

Thanx Mine is pretty quiet anywhere under about 3k RPM. :) At idle all you can hear is the CAI sucking in air (well unless the VTC's are clattering away). Mine sure sounds like a sleeper, although I'm sure the big GReddy on the back gives it away that it's not stock. lol |
My car sounds like a fixed up Maxima
CAI Y-pipe RT Cat, Apex WS Catback very throaty :) but not loud and no droning |

it sounds a little ricey in this mpeg for some reason. . . |
Some one once told me that my car with stock exuast and pop sounded like an airplane taking off:bonk:

our engines are noisey. it has something i call "pins and needles". i don't know how else to describe it. . . .

Cattman Y, wrapped flex section, RT cat, 2.25" cat back, no resonator and 2000 maxima muffler = throaty sound. Really quiet until you start reving it over 3500 or so. About as quiet as you are ever gonna get w/ an aftermarket exhaust. But I heard a Greedy catback and that was even quieter than mine. But costs $550+ though.

Yeah just regular header wrap. But I didn't need the 30-ft pre-packaged sutff. A local shop just hooked me up w/ some generic stuff(looks exactly the same) so I could just buy about 15ft or so. Wrap it 2x(ie.. wrap down then back and then hold w/ two big hose clamps)
Originally posted by PATRICK94SE You are a genious! I can think of a whole lot of people that this would help. And mainly me when I buy an exaust off of a certain some one who got cheap with his flex section. Did you just use regular header wrap? Grrrr why didn't I think of that. |
i have an exhaust leak, and my car sounds like boeing 747.

Jeff,
If I already have a Y-pipe, can I expect to feel any power gains in the seat of my pants if I get a 2.25" custom catback with 2000 Muffler? Because, usually if you can feel the power gain with a butt dyno, you are able to shave off atleast 2 tenths on the 1/4 mile. Also, isn't our stock B-pipe already 2.25" for the VE? Why shouldn't I go with a 2.5" pipe? Please explain. Thanks. |
I would say go with 2.5" Warpspeed Y pipes are 2.5, Greddy cat-back is 2.5 . 2.5" is pretty much the standard for 3.0 liter N/A engines
|
The place that did my cat-back just matched up the outlet on the Y, which was actually smaller than 2.5". You can go 2.5" if you want though. I don't think there's a whole lot to be gained by the cat back IMHO. I switched because my oem muffler was giving up the ghost. Stock is not 2.25". More like 2" I think. Not 100% sure though

Did Y, noticed some gains, did mustang 17x8 rims/tires, lost gains. Put cone on, regained gains hehe. Put rt cat/cat back and muffler, noticed little gains. but during this time  my stupid flex was leaking and that killed the low end also. I put a new one in(not a cattman unit flex) and the low end came back. But now this one started to leak slightly. So thus I wrapped it and it's quiet again.

Also, do you seriously think the aftermarket cat, did absolutely anything? I think 2 hp is not even noticable on track times. What do you think? Should I spend the $100 for a carsound cat, when my stock original cat is just fine for now? Thanks. |
Hard to say really because of the stupid flex ruined my butt dyno tests! For the cat, the one thing I noticed was w/ a new cat, my emissions cleaned up significantly! I mean it the measurements barely showed anything. So if you got more than 80-100k on your stocker, it might be a good time to upgrade/replace anyway. If you are short on cash, do the Y, intake, cat and maybe wait for the cat back. But it certianly doesn't HURT the performance.
Originally posted by Aaron92SE I appreciate your help Jeff. So, it looks to me like you're satisfied with your catback setup. It's quiet, but, yet more free flowing compared to stock. But, at the same time, allowing a deeper rumble to come from your muffler b/c of the cutout resonator. I believe my thinking is correct. Exhaust wrap is weak, Jeff. Be a real man and use a coke can like Dan did..
 |
2.5" + 2k muffler = very little gains and a makes for a quiet exhaust system :D
|
I actually tried that also w/ 2 hose clamps. Didn't do squat. Header wrap worked wonders. And because it's been replaced(ie.. no Jet-Hot), no coating to come off. Plus where I live, I never have corrossion problems anyway.
