Are all 95 ECU's 8-bit. Will they work in a 96?

I'm purchasing a G-Force ECU from a 95. I just read yesterday in a thread that 95 ECUs are 8 bit... is this true? If so, would I have problems in my 96? I'm not worried about check engine lights at all, but I do want an ECU that will work in my 96. Anyone know definitively?

BTW I'm still going to get a JWT ECU with 7000rpm rev limiter, but this will tide me over until next spring when I can afford one, and it will give me an extra ECU so that I'm not without a car while my stocker is being reprogrammed by JWT.

dunno if this helps but i have a 95 and im using an ECU from a 96 programmed by JWT.

Hmmm, yeah I think it will work. I'd never even known there to be a difference until just yesterday I saw that comment in a thread, still dunno if its true or not, but I've never heard of a 95/96 ecu swap causing a problen. I think I'll be fine.

Those ECU's aren't 8 bit. The 2nd gen maxima and Z31 plus early 3rd gens are 8bit. All 4th gens are 16 bit.

I thought that the 95/96es were 16 bit, and 97-99s were 32 bit. I have the FSM for a 98, but how can you tell?:gotme:

Nealoc, you can use the 95 ECU on you 96. I have a 96 auto and have a 95 5spd ECU. The year between the two is not as important as people think to switch them out.

I think there might be a difference. My 95 is weird. It throws out codes when I put in a GForce ECU. I heard that I have an OBD I. My 95 was a really early one. released end of 94.

Better to match serial

Same hear. Tried a GForce "for 95-96" MT, Fed, but got about 7 CEL codes. I would not be happy with even one code as I absolutely hate to see that CEL. If you did tolerate it, you will be resigning yourself to pulling codes every now and then just to see if something new came up. Hopefully, car-part.com will have the exact ECU for you car. They did for me, but the junkyard that did will not guarantee the "electrical" parts and I'm not willing to gamble $150 on something that may be damaged. The search continues...
