why won't it go in reverse?

I dropped my car off the other day to get the slave cylinder and master cylinder replaced. They went out on me the other day. Anyways, I get the car back and the mechanic asked me if I ever had trouble with reverse. I've never had trouble but he said it was hard to get it in gear. So I drive it home, and when I try to back out of the driveway, it will not go in reverse. I tried for a long time doing everything I knew how to do to back up, but nothing worked. Any advice as to what is wrong would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

are you auto or 5spd?? If you're a 5spd, I had that happen to me a couple of times. I mean I couldn't find it, or it didn't wanna pop in. But after I would work it for like 5- 10 sec, then it just went in like a hot knife through butter.

Its a 5spd. I tried for a long time, but nothing happened. There is no syncro for reverse, so what could it be?

well i sometimes had problems going into gears as well when car on and off...but i would just throw it in first real quick and then it would easily go into any gear....

The reverse gear is straight cut and is an actual sliding gear. Because of this, sometimes the teeth won't match up when you start your car because (the simple answer) the teeth don't match up. If I ever have problems getting into reverse, I just put the shifter into nuetral, rev the engine a tad, wait until it does down, and then try again. This will spin the intermediate gears just a bit and chances are the teeth will be able to lock this time. Good luck.

I guess you guys dont read your owners manuals... it even states you gotta double clutch it goin into reverse sometimes. For those who do not know what that means, it means you gotta put it back into N, release the clutch, press the clutch again then it will go into reverse. Other then that the design of this transmission sux.

Whatever happened to Daniel B. Martin

It is mentioned that DBM "left" in this thread... I did a search as to find out why he left and couldn't find one. Does anyone know why he isn't around anymore?

I am not an idiot. In every 5spd I've owned reverse gets stuck sometimes. But not like this. It won't even begin to go into gear, so I am guessing it is what that Daniel guy said.
