what would a bad fuel filter do?

Hi all,

My 98 GLE is running kind of odd. It feels like it's at redline at 4000 rpm. Seems to run fine if I don't want to push it, but I kind of miss the whole power band thing, you know?

Anyway, would a fouled fuel filter cause something like this? Seems logical to me that it would starve the engine of fuel, but I've never had to replace it before... only got 42,000 on the car.

Thanks,
Seth

I believe at the bare minimum you need to replace the fuel filter every 30,000. If you have 42,000 miles on your car, it is very likely in dire need of a new fuel filter.

does your car actaully not go higher than 4000 rpm? if so, thats a MAF problem....try hitting top speed...if you can go faster than 120, your good, if it gets cbed at about 117ish, then you need to change the fuel filter...

well, thats how i tested it

if it was his MAF the car would go into a mode where it wouldn't go above 2k rpms. change your fuel filter, it takes 5 minutes.
