I'm sure you can make it fit, but it won't look right at all. The tire will look extremely short and your speedometer will be way off. If you have an automatic, the shorter tire will confuse the automatic transmission computer. I'm assuming you want a wide looking tire, right? Your safest bet is to go with a 225/50. However the tire will still look a little short. I've got Kosei K1s in the 16X7.5 size and I've got 215/55s and my tires are plenty wide. They are the same width as my old 235/45s on my old 17" rims.
You must remember that wider tires DO NOT handle better. It is all relative to the weight of the car. Since the Maxima isn't heavy (~3000-3100lbs), it doesn't make full use of a tire like a 235 or 245 width tire. Even a 225 is pushing it in my book. By running a wider tire you don't make the contact patch any bigger, instead you make it wider and narrower. You can't make the contact patch bigger because it is all relative to the weight of the car.
