grind noise going into 2nd gear when its cold?? trans work?
ok guys my car has differential bearing problems (leaking seal, whinding noise) have to get that fixed. but i just notice when it was cold out side it grinded when going into 2nd gear. all other gears were fine? is it my throw out bearing (from searches) casue i have a ACT clutch waiting here in my room to be put in. saving my money for the trans work. should i just get the bearing done or more then that??? like sync/gear? thanx

Do you have a STS?
I have a STS and I suspect bearing problems before too long. My 2nd doesn't really grind very often, but it is the ONLY gear that does so. I have a feeling it's a combination of the STS on factory fluid (I've had my transmission fluid changed about 5 times now), and possibly the 2nd gear synchro wearing some. If the transmission is already out replacing the synchro would probably be a good idea since 2nd gear takes the most abuse (hard 1-2 shifts and downshifts).
I also plan on putting in polyurethane engine mounts to see if that might help some.

No, it wouldn't be the TO bearing I don't think. If it's a grind, even when you have the clutch fully engaged, then the primary thing to check is synchros.
Anyways, I thought the to bearing got replaced as part of the clutch, and you'll be installing your ACT soon, so...
I'd just get some Amsoil or Redline synthetic oil now and have them fill it with that when they're doing the tranny work. That will probably help out - I really haven't heard of people getting synchros replaced in maximas on the .org...nothing like the old hondas. Maybe find out what it'd be $ wise to replace the 2nd gear synchro and make your decision from there.
