??? i live in rhode island if that matters. i always thought it was a law that the dealer has to provide a 30day warrenty on all cars over $3,000. does anyone know about this?

Never heard of that before although I have never lived in Rhode Island. I always thought buying cars was "caveat emptor", buyer beware. I would call the Rhode Island State Attorney's office and ask them. You can probably get an 800 number off the state's web site.

I don't think there probably is a law like that, but if there is, it's state-specific. AFAIK it's common to see used cars sold as is, even at a dealership. Not as much anymore that car mfgrs are trying to come with more of the "certified used car" plans with warranties included, but...

You could check and see if RI has a law like that.

There are lemon laws though. If there are enough small things wrong with a car it can be technically called a lemon. If there's one major thing wrong with the car, like the engine blew up or the tranny bearings got chewed or something, then its a lemon and the dealer can be sued to fix or replace it. I think this is across the US. As for your 30 day warranty, I wouldn't count on it, but you could always threaten the dealer with a lawsuit (only effective if he's notified by your attourney).

I don't believe that there is a mandatory 30 day warranty, but I think you can return vehicle within the 30 days.:gotme: Call the RI State Attorney's office and ask them. You are right though there is a RI law of some sort for 30 days, unless bill of sale states "as-is". Where did you buy the car??? I live in RI.

In CT there is a mandatory 30 days or 3000 miles warranty on all cars purchased from a dealer for $3000 or more.

yea, it is nothing major though. it is just that the front brakes on my car are totaly dead and are grinding everytime i drive. well i took my car back to the dealer and he said it came with no warrenty and that i have to get it fixed myself. this upset me very much. what kind of half/a$$ed dealer is this? i mean come on now, brakes cost 60 bucks. now seing that i do not get payed untill next week i have to destroy my rotors driving the car. hopefully they will not be too bad and i can turn them. o well, this could have all been avoided if i didn't spend so much on my car.. but thats ok :)

oh and i bought it on cranston st. in cranston (obviously) ... it is right next to hong kong buffett which is close to attwood ave.

brakes are not usually covered under a warranty, but I believe a dealer should have had the car inspected before selling(unless, sold as-is). Definately call the general attorney. If they can't help at all, I'd love to go to the dealership with you.:buttkick: That's f***ed up for him to sell you the car like that.

finny Dec 6, 2002 07:44 AM

brakes are usually more of a courtesy item from a dealer. they dont have to replace them unless specified theyd cover it. if it was something major that u had problems with theyd be likely to hafta cover it. its prob gunna come down to if the brakes are bad u shoulda noticed it and said something b4 ya bought it and just suck up the 60 bucks for brakes
