when driving around city streets do you have o/d on or off? i know this is a stupid question but i just wanted to know

On and yes it is....:laugh:

I drove with it off if I was in stop and go traffic.

If it was traffic that opened up a little bit and I could get above 30, I turned it on.

OD is always on since I have to go above 40mph all the time. unless im in stop and go then its off

I drive in stop and go traffic all the time (Cali) I dont turn o/d off cuz i heard it consumes more gas so i leave it on. Do you feel any difference in terms of mileage? with o/d on and w/ it off

Of course it would take more gas. Its simple, look at your RPMs with it on, and watch them increase with it off. More RPMs, more gas...

od is basically a button telling the car its allowed to go into 4th gear right??.. if you leave it off you car will stay in 3rd...3rd gear goign fast = higher rpm..= more burnt gas..

Which is it? always or not? lol.

Why do you guys feel you need to turn it off when you are at low speeds? That makes no sense.

since i got my VB mod done @ jeff;s

i throw in to 2 and drive on ...

tranny cooler kicks a$$ !!

VB mod and traffic do not combine well ...with stop n go traffic

i drive stick but ill post anyways.
doing this in stop and go traffic may waste a bit more gas, but nothing significant unless going at higher speeds.

the reason to turn off o/d is to stop the transmission for shifting back and forth between 3rd and 4th gear in stop and go traffic.
this is better on the transmission (less shifting), and eats a bit more gas.

Yep, leaving O/D off in stop and go traffic makes the transmission less likly to "hunt for gears".

It's really a personally preference. Some people leave it on all the time, some people turn it on and off. The manufacturer put O/D there for a reason, might as well use it.

Yes, sometimes when I'm in slow traffic I'll turn off o/d too. The car drives more smoothly since it doesn't shift gears as much.

overdrive merely tells the car whether or not it can go into 4th gear. The 3rd gear RPM's will be different as a result.

Mine is almost always on. If there is a lot of snow, sometimes I turn it off to make sure I stay in a certain RPM level.

Mine is always on.

I usually drive with mine on, except on some roads where my speed drops below 25 and goes as high as 35 (back and forth). Everywhere else I leave it on.

Gotta love 'automagic'.

I leave mine on, but when I'm in traffic I turn it off.

99% of the time its always on. on some occasions when I have to drive in stop and go Lower speeds because at around 38mph it will shift to 4th so why let it shift to 4th when your going to have to slow down for traffic a second after it shifts?

with OD on, the torque converter will "lock up"...meaning it will cease being a fluid coupling and become rigid. this will reduce the heat the torque converter has to deal with and increase your car's efficiency....but if its going in and out of lock up (like in stop and go traffic that gets over 35-40mph), that wears on it. Excessive heat is the biggest enemy of your transmission and torque converter.

Back when my car was an automatic (I just love saying that, I think I'll say it again) Back when my car was an automatic, I kept the OD off in town, mainly so if I had to step on it there wouldn't be any wasted time unlocking the torque convertor and downshifting into third.

I turn OD/OFF when I'm in city traffic. It keeps the tranny in 3rd gear which makes the car more responsive. I don't want to be in 4th gear @30 MPH trying to get in front of a cab.:mad:

There's also less shifting that the tranny has to do which I feel keeps wear-n-tare down. Less shifting the tranny has to do means the longer it's gonna live.:)

just leave it on

i switch mine off in stop n go traffic. my car shifts much less with it off below 30 mph. otherwise i leave it on...hope all of our replies are helping you decide what to do...

Just kiddin... just gives you an "extra" gear for highway traveling....High RPM's = harder on the engine

I turn OD on/off on the street and on the highway. Does it really make any difference? Maybe, maybe not. Since I have an automatic and not able to shift, I got nothing else to do so why not turn OD on/off. :D
