Anybody have a clue on this one, because I sure as heck don't. They have stuff back to 97, so I looked at all of that stuff, but the 99 is the only one they list as having this.

Variable valve timing and LIFT management???? :confused:

what's also interesting are the MPG numbers...some folks on here say they average about 28 mixed driving...which is HIGHER then what Nissan claims...

my friend who was a nissan tech before was telling about how the maximas have the variable timing and all that but I never really payed attention since I always thought we didnt but now maybe he could be right?

They do not.

1) Have you seen these assemblies on the VE30DE and the VQ35? You need to put huge sprocket assemblies on the intake cams to accomodate the cam timing parts. Since the valve covers for the 99'-95' are virtually the same.....
2) They still rate the 99' at 190hp and 205ftlbs torque. Same as before. You had damned well be getting a good 15-20hp if you just spent that amount of engineering to put these expense assemblies in.
3) Lift management? WTF? There were NO varible lift technology in any USA Maxima. I do believe Nissan Japan has a system called NEO that supposed to feature some type of Nissan VTEC.

Yeah, I agree. Some web guy on nissan news did a major typo :bonk: Why would Nissan do a major engine modification on a car, the very last year they are making it? Not only that, they made an VI for the 4th gen around '98 and never brought it to the US. They were holding all the goodies for the 5th gen, to make it look that much more spectacular when it debuted. They had to hold back, cause they built such a great motor in the 4th gen.

Variable Intake system was designed in 1997 .. and thus why it was implimented in the Middle East because in 1997 is when the 4th Generation started there. It made no sense for Nissan to add this to the current 4th Generation 2 years after it was in production, so it was added to the maxima in 1999 .. i.e. MY2000 i.e. 5th Generation Maxima

That is an obvious misprint. Not only does the service manual show nothing about variable cam timing in any of the 4th or 5th gen manuals, but the engine simply lacks the hardware to do so (oil pressure solenoid for sprockets, etc).

It's a typ-o.

Only the 3rd gen VEs and 2002+ 3.5 VQs have variable valve timing.

I figured as much, but thought it was funny and figured I'd post it. :D

This makes no sense to me...Why didn't Nissan use their technology on the VQ30DE's in fourth gens...I feel cheated...

You should feel fortunate. If you had the problems us VE30DE owners had w/ our VTCs you would be screaming bloody murder right now. Also the VQ30 was Nissan's first alum blocked engine in the usa. Also Nissan was in dire finanical straits back then. You have a good motor, don't sell it short. Get a MEVI if you feel cheated.
