What's with the disk behind the rims?

I have an SE, so I can actually see the silver disk behind the rims. First off, what exactly is the name of this disk? And second, I live in a snowy climate and haven't been driving much, and I've noticed that they are getting this nasty brownish red in color. I assume it's rust, but is it bad or will it just sortof smooth off after I brake several times?

JeffesonM Mar 5, 2003 09:45 AM

ummm... brake rotor?

It's the brake rotor and it's fine. The only time to worry about your rotors is if you feel your car shake and unsmoothe ride every time you brake. Then either get them resurfaced or get new rotors.

Cool, thanks.. It just looks kindof gross though

The rust will disappear pretty quickly after you start driving it more. It should only really take about half a dozen decent stops to shave away all that rust. Nothing to worry about at any rate.

Oh, you're obviously a genious because you know about wheels. Maybe you could tell me about undervalued stock speculation and how much money I made last year doing it.

MacGyver265 Mar 5, 2003 02:40 PM

That would be great if this were a Stocks and Bonds forum now wouldn't it?

Dude, my mom even knows what a brake rotor is, or at the very least to call it a brake disk. If you went to www.howstuffworks.com and searched "brakes", or hell, even searched in google.com for "brakes" you would undoubtedly be barraged with all kinds of places selling brake rotors or disk brakes.

I mean, its almost as if you asked what that big hunk of metal under the hood with all the pipes and wires all over and into it was.

Important: Seriously though, I suggest you go to www.howstuffworks.com and spend a few hours going over the automotive section reading up on the basics. It will really help you out in many ways as well as being able to avoid the flamethrowers.

But seriously "Socrates- purveyor of wisdom and enlightenment", calm down man, you can't know everything about everything. I suggest you spend some of your considerable wealth on a book about basic car parts and their functions.
P.S- You don't want my trading advice. I'm a master of speculating on stocks that loose value. Peace.

Socrates:

Yhea dude don't take it personally.
Say you were at you big hot shot job, and some new guy walks up to you and your big shot friends and ask one of the simplest questions regarding your field of work. Do you think you and your friends might have a little laugh and give the guy a hard time for a couple minutes?
Thats all it is. Just a little joking.

Being as we all work in different fields I'm sure every single one of us could whip out some obscure knowledge that the general public doesn't know and "stump" the other people on this thread. I've got 3.5 years of an Aeronautical Engineering degree under my belt and also am well on my way to being a licensed commercial pilot, so let's not go there.

Being as this is an automotive related forum, it's generally assumed most people on here know what a brake rotor is. :gotme: If you really didn't know, now you know, and thats the point of these forums, learning about what you don't know.

But hey, he might have had a civic that had drum brakes...

spotch Mar 5, 2003 09:36 PM

meh, i give him props for having the balls to ask that. I gaurantee 90% of the people that are laughing at him wouldnt dare ask a question which to some of us is so obvious but can be uknown to the newbie car guy.

Now if he was talking **** that would be another story

Sin Mar 5, 2003 09:50 PM

At first, I asked myself "disc"? What disc? Then I thought to myself, he doesn't mean rotor does he? Then as I kept reading, I couldn't help but to laugh uncontrollabl.

Soc, don't be so immature. If you can't handle a couple guys taking jabs at your ignorance, you've got bigger concerns than a couple guys snickering at you. You don't know jack about cars. So what? You don't have to have a ****ing contest with how much you make or what you do know about. This isn't the howmuchmoneyImake.org, or investing.org. If you want to be the bigshot on a forum, or even more then a newby, then go to one of those forums. This is the Maxima.org. We talk cars here. You're free to end your membership at any time.

Now if you'll grow up, realize your place in this heirarchy of this field of knowledge, do your best to learn, and keep your drive for learning, then you'll be understand why we found your post so hilarious.

And any knob can get lucky on the stock market.....geez.

I know I did - and it was total luck - always is in some way.
