What's with the disk behind the rims?
 

I have an SE, so I can actually see the silver disk behind the rims. First off, what exactly is the name of this disk? And second, I live in a snowy climate and haven't been driving much, and I've noticed that they are getting this nasty brownish red in color. I assume it's rust, but is it bad or will it just sortof smooth off after I brake several times?

It's the brake rotor and it's fine. The only time to worry about your rotors is if you feel your car shake and unsmoothe ride every time you brake. Then either get them resurfaced or get new rotors.

The rust will disappear pretty quickly after you start driving it more. It should only really take about half a dozen decent stops to shave away all that rust. Nothing to worry about at any rate.

Are the front rotors expensive and aer they hard to change?

Dude, my mom even knows what a brake rotor is, or at the very least to call it a brake disk. If you went to www.howstuffworks.com and searched "brakes", or hell, even searched in google.com for "brakes" you would undoubtedly be barraged with all kinds of places selling brake rotors or disk brakes.

I mean, its almost as if you asked what that big hunk of metal under the hood with all the pipes and wires all over and into it was.

Important: Seriously though, I suggest you go to www.howstuffworks.com and spend a few hours going over the automotive section reading up on the basics. It will really help you out in many ways as well as being able to avoid the flamethrowers.

Being as we all work in different fields I'm sure every single one of us could whip out some obscure knowledge that the general public doesn't know and "stump" the other people on this thread. I've got 3.5 years of an Aeronautical Engineering degree under my belt and also am well on my way to being a licensed commercial pilot, so let's not go there.

Being as this is an automotive related forum, it's generally assumed most people on here know what a brake rotor is. :gotme: If you really didn't know, now you know, and thats the point of these forums, learning about what you don't know.
