What's the best catalytic converter to purchase?
Hello :)
Curious.... if my cat is indeed dead and needs replacing, which cat would you guys recommend? the high flow from custom-maxima? another brand... etc etc.... :) Thanks all :) EDIT: I would be looking for something performant... hehe |
budget sells a highflow Cat for like $105US

Actually you would get a nice little gain from the test pipe (3-4 HP) but if you are looking for a cat the will give you (it gave me about 1hp peak) hp try the Random Technologies High Flow cat it is a great cat for around 150. Brian

Do not buy the Random Technologies cat. While I was in the market for a new cat I heard numerous reports of people hating the RT because the inner honey-comb section broke loose and rattled around. I did not listen to them and bought it. 6 months later, rattle rattle rattle. I'm buying a test pipe.

How do you guys pass emissions testing with no cat? Do they do the full roller-test in your state in addition to the regular idle-speed tailpipe probe?
Just wondering.... -RMB |

Okay, what about this letter I saw on the maxima@lumiere list that was written by Mike Kojima? Makes me wish I kept my stock cat...
>>There is a signifcant difference between a OEM cat and >>an aftermarket cat in performance. An aftermarket cat >>typcialy has a precious metal loading in the matrix >>wash of about 10 grams of platinum and palladium per >>100 square feet of matrix. An OEM cat has a loading >>of twice as much, 20 grams or more per 100 square >>feet. >> >>So what does this mean? An oem cat has a conversion >>efficency of nearly 100% to 95% while the aftermarket >>cat is only 70% at best when new. >> >>You are way more likely to pass with a new OEM cat >>than an aftermarket cat by a margin of 30% even when >>things are nice and new. >> >>Nissan OEM cats do not have a performance disadvantage >>of the supposed hi-flow aftermarket cats. I have >>measured a drop in 5 wheel hp woth the random flow >>high flow cat for the 240SX over the stock Nissan cat. >> >>I have ran a cat on high powered NA car with only a >>loss of a couple of hp over a straight pipe. >> >>Nissan cats are superior to the aftermarket. >> >>Mike |
