KYB AGX's and Progress spring installed

Hey guys, I just got my spring/strut installed. I now have Progress springs , and KYB AGX's all around set at 2 in the front and 4 in the rear. I just have to say that this setup is AWESOME! I drove, it all weekend and my max has been transformed into a great handler. I believe 2 and 4 are acceptable for this car the ride is firmer but not harsh

(Caveats) Unbeknownst to me my maxima was never truly stock, when I purchased the car, the previous owner had installed KYB GR2's in the front and left the stock struts in the rear, with stock springs all the way around. This is NOT the setup to run, my car handled like SH@T, and it made clunking noises when you turned the wheel because the previous owner installed the struts himself and did NOT know what he was doing. Point is I do not know how maximas ride completely stock, with the upgrade I feel very little difference in overall ride quality but a world of difference in handling. I will keep you guys updated as the springs wear in more.

Currently I am Extremely pleased with the upgrade and would highly recommend doing this to your car. I now remember why I wanted this car in the first place!

Also:
Many thanks go out to NJMAXSELTD, for anyone looking to do suspension work in the tristate area I HIGHLY recommend taking your car to him. He does an excellent job, highly professional, and extremely patient. Prices are also very reasonable, and a good working knowledge of all things Maxima! Thanks Tom.

Glad you like your setup!

We had sort of a mini meet at the shop on Saturday. It was fun, but man I worked my butt off.

Do you have any pics of your set up? If not, how big is the gap between the tires and wheel well. Thanks.

Sqard May 19, 2003 10:57 AM

Tom installed the same setup for me and it rides awesome! PS, I may be getting a new max so I may have some more work for you :D

danthediablo19 May 19, 2003 01:56 PM

you have pics of the setup for the kyb and progress??

khott2003 May 20, 2003 04:05 AM

njmaxseltd: I'm gonna try to install my AGX/Sprints myself but I don't know all the parts I need. What parts do you replace when you do the installs? I am getting KYB dustboots and I have camber bolts. What else are neccessities? Thanks.

i love this setup. Had it since last summer, the springs do settle to a good 2 inch drop and looks even all around. In detroit im setup at 2 in the front and 1 in the rear, in pittsburgh im at 3 in the front and 5 in the rear.

Tom is the strut/spring guru. Did you ride in the car with the Progress springs? How does it compare to your H&Rs?

ghetto_bill:
I will try to takes some pics this weekend weather permitting. try to post them by Monday. I will measure the gap when i get home tonight according to the drewn site it should have dropped the front 1.7 and the rear 1.5in.

Sqard: :D good for you after the mini meet saturday I have been considering picking up a fifith gen myself and selling my Denali:D .

danthediablo19: sorry didn't take any pics of the install.

khott2003: Unless you have a fully tooled mechanic shop to work in have someone do it for you. If you live in the tri state area just have Tom do it Trust me the aggravation you save will be well worth it. Highly recommend professional install.

NotNew!!NewSN!! I LOVE IT TO!! :greenboun

njmaxseltd: Absolutely love the setup! Now I need new tires! I've been hitting the turns harder and harder and the new weak point is the tires. The michelins I have don't have much feedback as to when your about to be AOL. I think I will go with some pirellis.

mitch33x May 20, 2003 11:11 AM

I've had the Progress/AGX setup for a year now and I still love the drop/handling

maxima105 May 20, 2003 11:34 AM

I plan to go to with AGX's also....It's great to hear you enjoyed that combo!!!

Are you sure? I have a spring compressor and air tools and everything. My dad and a couple friends will help me out and most of them are pretty mechanically inclined. I've heard that having it profressionally installed is at least $100 from an org member and $200+ from local shops. As it is I've already spent over $100 for boots, camber bolts, and the compressor and I still need to buy the strut bearings. Do you know what all Tom installed with yours? Thanks :D

Spring/Strut installation isn't that hard. With a spring compressor, a full socket set (no air tools), and two friends, I was able to get it done in about 5 hours. 5 hours was with mistakes, and taking our time. I've done two other installs since and we can do the entire car in about 2 hours with three knowledgable people. You shouldn't have too much trouble if your mechanically inclined.

- Soak all bolts before hand with Liquid Wrench or some penatrating solvent. Do it the day before if you want.
- Get deep sockets
- Take your time, and double check things before tightening bolts. We put a strut together and later noticed that the spring was upside down. Then we put a strut in with the dials facing out, so we had to redo that too.
- If you can, use a power drill on the spring compressor it will go MUCH faster.
Good Luck

I would also like to know how they compare to H&R's because I will
have to make a decision here soon. Also would GR2's be a good match
with either of these springs or should I spring for AGX's.

njmaxseltd May 21, 2003 05:09 PM

I only test drove the car to make sure he had no noises. I really didn't hit the highway to get a feel for how the ride is. The Progress springs are nice and firm, the drop is even and as far as I felt, they ride pretty good.

Compairing them to H&R's, I'd say they are about the same level of comfort.

975spEEd - The GR2's are a nice firm struts, their valving is exactly the same as AGX's set up on 2 and 4. Thats the setting Monkeymax is riding on with his springs. Thats also the default setting the AGX's come set to.
