Can't get trans-axel back into tranny...Help

Replaced the drivers side tras-axel seal, now I can't get the tras-axel back into the tranny. It goes in about half way then won't budge. I've been messing with it for over an hour.
Is there some trick to this???

also is the seal supposed to sit flush or not?

Thanks in advance.

you tried extending the cv joint and using it as a hammer right?

matty Jun 30, 2003 05:28 PM

The seal should NOT sit flush with the tranny...On our trannies there is is no seal stopper so the seal goes in and in till you stop it...Let it sit alittle out from the tranny...

Axle- try the hammer trick, instead of a hammer, use a rubber dowal so you dont ruin the end

Now I am confused. I talked to an old org. member on the phone and he said that Nissan labeld their parts wrong and the left seal is for the right and the right is for the left. But I did not get mine from the dealership, and they old seal and the new one look exactly alike.

Screw this, I am going to mess with it tomorrow.

I have a knack for making the most simplest thing sooo difficult.

make sure the snap ring is centered or it will not go in straight

  :banghead:

So I get up early and finally get the drive axel back in. Start filling the tranny with fluid and sure enough it starts leaking again. Upon furthur inspection the seal is not seated evenly and is inset into the trans.
I'm like WTF, I did not put the seal in like that.

So I am in the midst of taking everything apart again.

Do you think I will be able to use the seal again, or will I have to get a new one?

Ok, so when I removed the trans-axel this time two small round springs are hanging on the end of the splines? I did not see these the first time. What the HeLLL

:D :woowoo:  Seal, drive-axel, and MT fluid are in and all is well.

I totally know what I did wrong. This is a very simple repair that I made difficult.

Well what did you do wrong?

just a guess....
tapped in the oil seal too far...and not straight.
attempted to slide axle in and it got jammed since it's not in right.

while pulling axle back out it tore the spring on the seal and the end of that story. reinstalled new seal to the correct spot.

Basically. But I also tried to take a short cut and not remove the whole drive axel. Trying to slide the axel out of the way while still connected to the wheel hub does not work well. It's way too hard to set the seal correctly and reinstall the drive-axel that way.
So I eventually removed the whole thing. After that it took me a matter of minutes to do the job.

But that's not everything. It is leaking again:(

The seal is not the problem. It's my bearings. I have been limping along for the last 6 months with shot bearings. I think I am at the end of the line with this tranny. Either a rebuild or a new tranny will have to go in soon.

My current problem is that I am in Oklahoma and have to make the drive back to Chicago with this tranny leaking like a sive. I'll have to stop a couple times to refill it. It's leaking pretty bad.

I don't want to get it fixed in Oklahoma in case I have any problems down the road.

 It's my own fault for letting it get this bad.
