I'm going to sell the max, have a few ??'s

About how much do you think a 97 gle with 90k on it is worth?

Is 90k miles considered average?

How much would a trade in get me?

I looked on kbb.com, but I've heard that it isn't that accurate.

thanks

Kevlo911 Jul 9, 2003 05:51 PM

did u try edmunds.com
where did u hear kbb isn't right?

Brockster Jul 10, 2003 04:46 AM

Are you going to part out your ride?

Torgus Jul 10, 2003 04:55 AM

kbb and all that are just GUIDES. how much is the car worth in your opinion? what do you need to make off it, aka pay off car loan? student loan? downpayment for a new Z3? also i'd take off all your mods its lowers a car's value by alot. its better for the buyer to never have known you did anything to it at all...it also depends on the town and area you are selling it in. a maxima in a ****ty neighborhood or a maxima in a rich white suburban town is going to sell for a different price. also if you where you put on miles to it matters some. take the KBB price and hike it up 3k. if no one bites for it drop it a grand. just out of curiosity what are you going to buy?

Capitone Jul 10, 2003 10:48 AM

I agree that a modded max can sell less than a completely stock one, but then like Torgus mentioned, it depends on where your at. If your in a city that has a lot of modded rides you'll probably get a better price, while most of the time you deal with a trade in, you'll get less for mods and more for stock.

That said, let me gauge you guys opinions. Does anyone think selling a Max with a TV hooked up too it would warrant increasing the sell price by much? Im thinking with the majority of potential buyers, options like these would make the car feel like a better deal to the buyer, where as person's more knowledgable about cars are not as likely associate as much "WOW!" to the option. What do you guys think?

maximizd97 Jul 10, 2003 10:32 PM

Assuming the car is in almost perfect condition, shoot for about 9-10K as a starting price, and don't use the mods as a source of extra value...chances are you won't sell the max to anyone like us devoted folks....a trade in would probably get you 5-7K and would be pretty wasteful to do.

rule of thumb for most cars depending on value: 1-2k off blue automatically. or expect to sell it for that much less.

Black97GLEnj Jul 11, 2003 12:49 PM

I'm in the process of bringing the max back to stock. I feel that I will get more $$ back by selling the mods seperate and selling a car with no mods on it. I personally would not buy a modded car, cause I think alot of the fun is getting the mods yourself to personalize your car.

As to what I'm gonna buy, I'm looking to get a pickup truck for the time being. I have a quad that I barely use cause i have no way to get it around, so I think a cheap Chevy S-10 or Ford Ranger will be good for now. I'm going to be graduating in January, so if and when I get a full time job with a decent salary, I'll get something new.

I think I'm gonna shoot for around 9k and see what type of offers I get.

Thanks for the info

Im thinking about selling so I can get another one! Same year, same color, Less miles :p

Torgus Jul 11, 2003 03:09 PM

the general thought is i believe, that a person who mods their cars, beats on their cars. personally i don't, but lots do. thus i would not consider buying a 'modded' car, ever.

Capitone- thats me in 2 years.

Why don't u just buy a engine with less miles, it would probably cheaper in the end unless you wait a few more years.

Depending on the age of your car, almost all dealers give you a worse deal than if you sell your car privately. If you have to go through many visits by prospective buyers to sell it, then you'd be better off trading it in (the hassle ends up costing you more in time).

Keep in mind that dealers tend to go far below blue book values for vehicles near 100k or higher mileage, unless it is a high value brand like BMW and Mercedes. I briefly proposed my car as a trade-in (132k miles) and the Nissan dealer shook his head with $1000 as the best he could do. Blue book shows over $4000.

So, if you've got time and not much money, sell it privately.

Engine modifications will definitely the lower resale value--it will be expected that the car has been abused. Conservative non-performance modifications can actually increase the value a little (e.g. installation of leather, wood dash, chrome trim, upgraded stereo, etc). Suspension is another story... it depends on how drastic it is (e.g. a big drop will likely lower the value too), and who the buyer is.

Good luck. Post your final results/sale$$ to this thread.

For one, the engine is fine. It'd be ashame to swap an engine that appears to be in it's prim. It's the microscopic paint chips, and deteriating cloth interior that bugs me now aday's. I do see past all of that when I open her up on the highway going too and from work though :D . I just want the same car with a "fresher" feel is all. Lesser miles does'nt always mean "cleaner" car, but I think you guys know what I mean.

Grey00lustre Jul 14, 2003 11:37 AM

beside kbb tried edmunds and nada...both should give u a idea...but in my opinion a car with that year and mileage is worth no more than $7000 at most...

kdarci Jul 15, 2003 01:21 PM

My feeling is keep it until it dies! What a waste of $$ to buy a BRAND NEW car!! You might as well keep the Max - it's a great car!
This is my 2nd Max. Had an 89 SE and sold it with 182K - it's still running, too!
Currently the 97 GLE has 166K and still going strong. This one is going to run until 200K before I consider getting a gently used Max.

Dihappy Jul 15, 2003 08:57 PM

In TX, that car in perfect condition is valued at about $10k by most banks.

Private sales go for about $8500, i just bought a 97 GLE for $8200 with 86k miles, no mods.
