I'm worried,,,90mph @ 0nly 3000rpm

guys im a little worried, i just installed a cone filter and midpipe. I live in new york, right now im in toronto for 2 weeks and i never floor my gas pedal, i only put it down like 3/4 way down, but when i do this, the car growls really nice, it pulls harder than before but it reaches 90 mph and the rpm is only @ 3000!!! i thought my gauge is probably broken but on the local street from a stop, it kick the needle up to 5,000 rpm so the gauge is working, but is this normal, oh and its and automatic tranny with the overdrive on. 90 @ 3000????
please explain.
I got to drive another 520 miles back to the Bronx.

According to CarTest2000 Speed vs Gear vs RPM plots, 3000 rpm @ 80 mph in 4th is right where you should be.

:gotme:

If you're accelerating hard in 4th the torque converter is probably unlocked. When that happens you could be 500rpm higher than when cruising if you're accelerating, or 500rpm lower than when cruising if you are coasting.

Unless you floor it (near 100% WOT), it won't downshift from OD.
Autos have longer running legs than 5-speeds.

Where is the tach @60mph? Is it around 2k?

meccanoble Jul 18, 2003 01:11 AM

jesus, 90 mph at 3k rpm?! i was on garden state parkway today and i was doing 90 @ 4.8k rpm

Bmr4life Jul 18, 2003 06:27 AM

i can't remember my 90 mph rpm, but I know 80 is around 2700 rpm for me. Thats probably high because my knock sensor needs replacing.

yesterday I took a peak, and I figure I'm between 3100 and 3200 RPMs.
