Tranny problems!

My transmission recently died on me. I can only assume it's the differential bearing problem I've dreaded since I first started coming to this board.

The tranny is leaking where the bellhousing meets the block. It's leaking black fluid (rear main seal?) but it has a very strong smell of gear oil (differential bearing?). Anyone experience this?

My main question is: Since I'm going to have the tranny off for repair, is it worth the money to have the internals cryo-treated?

are you going to be seeing big power in the future? if not, well.. that makes the decision a lot harder. I am sure you know the costs involved with cryogenically treating your gears.. the process itself is not too much (80$ + shipping both ways, (process takes ~1week + ship time)) but getting your transmission opened and gears removed can rack up some labor times.. but in your case you will already have the transmission opened..

basically, if you are going to have the transmission opeened, and think you are going to be boosting it, nitrous whatever.. then it is probably worth your money. cryo treating doesn't make it bulletproof as i am sure you know also. but it is one step closer to it :)

I haven't ruled out FI, but I was thinking more along the lines of making it stronger for durability and extending the life of it. I drive pretty hard, so I'd like to keep the tranny closed for at least another 200k :D

Yeah, I am doing the labor myself, so the only issue would be that of time. Having my transmission out for a few weeks might not work well for me. (I'm already missing my car, and it's only been a week! :()
