SO.........How does a Y-PIPE sound???? I'm afraid it's not for me!

I wonder if anyone here who has a budget y-pipe have had it for long. I'm afraid that when I get mine, it might not be as tough as the stock pipe. Before I purchase, I would also like to hear how a stock Maxima sounds vs. a one with only a y-pipe on the exhaust...I'm afraid it might be too loud for what i can handle. Then again, I want the extra power it supplies. I had a performance muffler on a honda back in the days and took it off cause I went nutz after some time! If anyone has a sound clip or anything of that sort, please let me know! Thanks in advance.

doesn't really change the sound too much...normal people wouldn't even know you had any exhaust work done.

changing a muffler would make a car much louder

I put the warpspeed on my car. No other exhaust mods except Y pipe. It has a little rumble when the motor is idling and when it frist starts up. I also notice a noise at about 2500 with generous throttle. After and before 2500 very hard to tell anything has been done. My muffler is almost gone so i plan on getting the B pipe with the flange for the 2000+ muffler and replacing the muffler with a 2000+ maxima muffler. From what i've read the 2000+ muffler is almost as good as a flowthrough style with stock quietness (reasonably close). I'm looking for a quiet car not one of those honda rasping exhaust setups that way if i get on it i won't wakeup my daughter in the back :)

i dont want a y-pipe beacuse it resonates too much w/ the interior cabin... i'll stick to just my greddy sp.

I have the Budget Y-pipe with the stock muffler and stock intake. I just love the way it sounds. It gives the Max a much deeper tone at startup. Without the y-pipe it sounds like the family sedan that it is. The deeper sound and the extra power you get when you let the VQ engine breathe is worth it!!

Don't worry, it's not loud at all...it just adds a little grumble to the exhaust note. Compared to my intake, my y-pipe is a mute :D

Thanks for responding all. From what I read, it seems as though it is reasonably quiet, except when you really want it to make some noise...and supposedly does. One more question... what did you all do with your stock Y-pipe? I don't think it's worth throwing away cause I heard it's very very expensive. Having said that...it is probably worth every penny not to harm it when taking it off, right?

Keep it if you have any interest in going back to stock. Or, you could try to sell it to someone who is going back to stock for a sale :D

err i was afraid of different sounds... also...

but the ypipe doesn't change anything... on my car it made it a bit more raspy V8 sounding... nothing big... It's the Cone intake that makes tons of sound now :-/

I got a warspeed...and it makes this low rpm growl....sounds sweet, but other than that, it's quiet.

Do any of these Y-pipes actually have a piece of metal welded on it saying "for race cars only, illegal for street use blah" cause my stillen y-pipe does =\. I'm going to take to get installed at the end of this month, but..i'm afraid some of the shops won't do it because of that.

sryth Aug 13, 2003 03:53 AM

Yeah...Stillen is the only one that has it, as far as I know. If you can't find a shop that won't give you **** over it, just hit it a few times with a grinder. :D

crowghost Aug 13, 2003 03:56 AM

Yeah, I have a grinder in the garage. I think i'll just use that, Thx. :D

The aftermarket y-pipe is relatively easy to put on. You'll just go insane removing the stock one.

The Y with anything but a stock or 2000 maxima muffler gets loud from what I hear. I ran a Cattman Y with 2.5" pipe, no resonator and a 2000 max muffler on my 3-gen VE 5-sp. What was one sweet sounding machine! Nearly stock quiet and idle/part throttle. But when you got on it, a really nice growl came though.
