Check Engine Soon Light Flashing/Air Bag Light
Hi All. I just registered to this site today and I think you guys have already saved me $700. I just bought a 99 SE-L with 123,000 miles on it. I know, I know..it's a lot of miles, but I got it real cheap. $6,500. Its a Sterling Mist 5sp with black leather and just about every other option I've heard of for a 99. I also have a 95 SE.
Anyway, about the 99....both the Check Engine Soon light(steady)and Air Bag light(flashing) have been on since I bought it 5 days ago. I dropped it off at the dealer today for a diagnosis. They called me back and said I need side airbag modules...$700. I picked the car up...paid the $70 for the diagnosis and told them I'd bring the car back to have the work done next week. I decided to do a search on this site for the Air Bag light. Found the reset instructions (open door, turn ignition on, push door button 5 times, restart). Guess what? It worked! The light is out and has stayed out. Can you believe those Aholes were gonna charge me $700 to replace both side air bag modules?!?! I'm goin back tomorrow to raise hell.
They also said my Check Engine Soon Light was because I need a new catalytic converter.....again this would be another $700. They wrote in the diagnostic report that the car had an aftermarket air cleaner (which is true because I can see it) and an aftermarket "free flow" catalytic converter. I've read a couple posting here about retrieving an error code from the engine somehow, but can't find instructions on how to do this. Would installing a "free flow" converter cause the light to come on? If so..should I even care? Will it still pass emissions? Any advice? And thanks again...this site is a godsend.
