smoke out of exhaust when at WOT

My friend was behind me the other day and i did a nice little WOT, and he later told me that there was smoke or whatever coming out of my exhaust. Is this normal?? What the hell is it? Could it be 89 octane?
My car is a 99, with 37k on it. It shouldnt be doing this.

Let me know, thanks

depends on what color it is..

black smoke = running rich
white smoke = burning oil

i won't even comment on the 89 Octane because the manual clearly states 91 or better

89 octane....lol perhaps your doing it for lower cost... but just wait till your engine starts tearing up...then you will wish you spent the extra 5 cents a gallon.

LOL. Let me rephrase....it wont tear your engine up sure...but you will have decreased performance, more likey hood of clogging your cat sooner, failing emissions.................shall I continue...

It could just be carbon deposits being blown out. Not unusual.

It doesn't wreck your engine. Knock sensor changes the timing so that you don't get as much power or mileage. Knock sensors are there so that you can use 89 octane if necessary. 91 octane allows your engine to advance the timing to get slightly more power.

Use of an octane below 91 is NOT going to wreck your engine, clog your cats, or cause you to fail emissions. The ONLY thing it will do is reduce your performance and possibly fuel mileage.

It's quite possible.. solution: floor it more often Be concerned when white/blueish smoke starts coming out of the exhaust.
