Just a quick question for those shift w/AUTO's
 

For those of you who like to shift your automatics when racing, or just to feel the difference, where do you all start? I've been told start on 2nd, with over drive off, and then drive? Is this safer than over drive off, 1st, 2nd, and then drive? Also has anyone had problems with there tranny, when unpluggin the resistor box? I've heard that if you swap trannies with a I30 you wont have to worry about the tranny, because infinitie's are stronger? And how much help does a tranny cooler give?

Start in second gear? That has to be ****ing up your tranny...

u should start in first because if u dont the ecu will automatically shift for u, but unless you have the mods to necesitate going above the ecu's set shift point, i wouldnt shift it on my own. also keeping o/d off when u start off makes no differences, o/d off is just like driving with only 3 speeds in the auto trans, it wont shift into overdrive when its off, u can leve o/d off at the track, because 3rd gear is more than enough to get u past the line about the i30 trans' i think only the manual trans is stronger, and that only with the LSD

if you start in second and go WOT it drops to first anyway.

I'd start off in D and just mash the gas. Getting a VB upgrade is the only thing that is gonna get you closer to shifting fast and keep you from damaging your tranny by trying to act like you have a stickshift.

i don't think there is a difference. Face it, ain't a stick. It's auto, so put it in D and floor it.

There is another solution. Wire a WOT switch to open the circuit to the drop resistor. Very effective and very inexpensive. There's a good thread in the 1/4 and 1/8 mile racing forum on this.

Take it from me. . . don't auto shift!
After I had my tranny rebuilt TWICE I decided to just put it in "D" and drive....if you wanna shift, get a 5-speed.

racing off the line and shifting manually is much faster and gives the chance to almost control the shift points since it doesn't shift immediately "there's like 700 rpm delay after u shift" , but putting ur shifter on 2nd is taking out that advantage because ur ecu will start from first anyways and shift on its own from 1st to 2nd and stay on 2nd till u put it on D ,,,, for the resistor don't leave it unplugged too bad for the tranny , what i did is i cut one of the wires going to the resistor and ran awire from one end to a switch in the console then a wire fromthe switch to the other end of the cut wire when i race i just turn it off and back on for the streets,,,,,,,,,peace

I shift my auto when commuting but I don't shift when running the 1/4. Shifting the auto is not helping to get lower times at all. When you manually shift, there is a BIG delay when the gears shift. There is also no need to put the car in second. Yu'll hit the rev limiter if you forget that it's in second and then there goes your time down the tubes.
I was able to run 15.6 ( and could have gone faster if I lost a couple of pounds) stock and without shifting. Whenever I got to redline, I let up on the accelerator a tad to allow the gears to drop faster. Flooring it though the gears doesn't help either.

NISMOMAXMAN: If you're going to stay auto, get the tranny cooler.

Dood, I thought you guys would have figured this out already, In Auto's 1 is first Gear, 2 is 2nd and 3rd gear, D is All of the gears including 4. Your only supposed to use the shifter when you need extra power, Dont mess around with it all the time or you will mess up your tranny, I had some experience with that, Also dont unplug your AT Transmission Pressure Sensor when your car is on, I did that once and My park turned into Neutral, 1 was Neutral, 2nd was like 5th gear in a 5spd, and D was acting all funky, then 2 days later my tranny died!!!

I've got a MEVIU, so I think shifting manually helps, but that's with a MEVI.

Your car opens the circuit automatically at WOT and makes your trans shift at full line pressure. Your mod is already active, there's no need to duplicate what the car already does.

It just helps you get above the stock shiftpoints of the tranny computer.

Where'd you get this crap from? There are track numbers that prove manual shifting don't really do squat in 1/4mile runs. 700rpm delay? My car shifts when the gear changes, there is a split second delay, maybe a few RPM, but 700. That would take a long time. Also shift delay depends on the engine speed, at 2000rpm it will be slower than at 6500rpm, or it just feels like it. Anyway how would you know, cause the rpms go down whenever you shift anyway???

Not quite. The pressure with the resistor disconnected is noticably higher than regular WOT.

My car chirps the tires on the 1-2 shift when disconnected...not even close at regular WOT.
