I want 13's N/A, help me decide...

Please help me decide what to do. My goal is to hit 13's N/A at the track within the next 6 months. I am guessing that with the mods I have added since my 14.4 (JWT ECU, 70mm TB, and some weight savings) that I would be able to run a 14.2 on a good day. I would think that with a torque converter I could cut a 2.0x 60 ft time which could land me at a high 13 second pass. If I were to do a 5 speed swap, I would definately be able to hit 13's and I think the car would be faster overall (higher traps). The money is not too different. A TQ converter is $425, I could probably install myself, but I was quoted at $330 for the install plus $100 in synthetic tranny fluid. This would be in the $850 to $900 range. I could probably do a 5 spd swap for not much more that that.

well is the car a daily driver? do you like driving stick or auto better? do you comute a lot, do city driving, etc? don't torque converters hurt some of the daily driveability of an auto? it depends on all your preferences

It is my daily driver, it has to get me to work every day. I like 5spds but I like my auto too. A protorque converter is not enough stall increase to hurt daily drivability or gas mileage at all. Most people could not even tell that I had a TQ converter installed if I got it.

BEJAY1 Nov 17, 2003 05:17 PM

Your profile still shows the 16" Enkei's and 225 tires. Just switching to lighter 15" and slicks could get you an extra .2-.4 I would think. Have you tried higher octane mixes yet? Mike seemed convinced that his JWT loved better fuel when he ran his 14.1x. Technosquare and I are discussing the same thing right now about their program. Maybe the fuel could cut another .1-.2. Auto's can do just fine at the strip.

yea, i didnt know what stall speed you were looking at. i personally prefer my auto to a 5 speed as well  get a set of stock 15 inch steelies from someone, the weight would help, or even slicks.

I have my stock 15" SE wheels with two 205/50-15 tires on them for the track. They weigh less and lower my gear ratio too. I have run a bottle of octane boost at the track but with little or no effect. I don't have access to unleaded high octane fuel. The track sells 110 octane leaded gas, I don't know if this would harm anything or not.

I say keep the auto and get a Custom made Torque Converter. Then Stage II VB mod, HEHEHEHE EVIL, also you will need all the basic boltons like Neal's Maxima. Also if your really serious of going NA, get High Compression Rings with Pistons, and rods, Get custom made Cams for More Displacement! Then your gonna want a MEVI and a Pathfinder TB, After all this you might wanna Bore & Polish.

OOO forgot one thing, Get a ECU with atleast 7500 Revlimit.

You might even run 12's with this setup but need extensive weight reduction, Nice Tires to grip on the trax, and a Unsuspecting Victim.

Check please.

mzmtg Nov 17, 2003 07:29 PM

Keep the auto :D Read some of the F-body and 'Stang boards to get an idea of what its like to live with a higher stall TC.

Also, consider drag radials and some millenia wheels up front.

Dont forget to come run down here at MMP again. We're all fast at this track.

he has a 70mm throttle body, so he doesnt need a pathfinder one. also, why would you rev the engine to 7500? especially if you increased the compression. Also, cams wouldnt increase the displacement. the bore and stroke effects the displacement, not the lift or duration of the valves.

I30tMikeD Nov 17, 2003 07:49 PM

5-speed swap then you will have a high 13 sec car. Later you could do the headers, extude hone and maybe some cams.....then you would have a mid 13 sec car.

95maxrider Nov 17, 2003 09:30 PM

Slicks, more weight reduction, and the TC + VB mod would yield consistant 13.7's or so.

I probably already have as much or more N/A mods than any other 4th gen. I already have a VB mod, MEVI, pathfinder TB, and a ecu with higher redline. I will post a list of my mods so people won't add what I already have. This is what I run at the track.

Variable intake
Hybrid JWT Intake
Cattman SS Y-pipe
test pipe
B-pipe (non-mandrel 2.5)
Hooker Muffler
Bullet muffler (resonator)
RVM Underdrive pulley
FSTB
RSB
Don's VB Mod
stock 15" wheels with 205/50-15 kuhmo tires.
B&G Lowering Springs
KYB AGX

added since since last track visit:
JWT ECU
70mm Pathfinder TB
Lightweight battery
Larger K&N Filter
other small weight removal (heatshields, etc.)

K&N makes 2 sizes of filters for Maximas???

Have you weighed your car at all?

Nealoc187 Nov 18, 2003 11:49 AM

I think a TC and slicks is a more surefire way to run 13s than a 5spd swap.

I totally agree.

SteVTEC Nov 18, 2003 03:14 PM

What Dave and Neal said. :)

Plus it would be freakin cool to have a 13-second all-motor auto 4th gen. I don't think we have one of those yet. :naughty:

SXN Nov 18, 2003 03:54 PM

very impressive list of mods though

NmexMAX Nov 18, 2003 03:56 PM

Yeah I think it be cool to have a 13 second auto, so go ahead, be the pioneer, you're already my idol.

The filter is not made for a maxima, K&N has tons of filter sizes. I took measurements and then ordered one. Here is the post I made on the filter along with pictures.

I haven't weighed my car at all, but it is probably on the light side. I usually keep a gutted trunk as well as the weight reduction I have done.

SXN Nov 18, 2003 06:13 PM

what weight reduction HAVE you done? didnt get cleared up on that

BadKarma99-4spd Nov 18, 2003 08:02 PM

keep the auto, be speacial

i didnt realize you had the mevi before the ecu

its nothing major, just the usual like y-pipe, b-pipe, muffler, underdrive pulley, hood liner, extra stock intake parts removed, exhaust heat shields, tow hooks, spare tire, jack, trunk liner and matting, lightweight battery, wheels, a bunch of little things that don't really add up to much. I also removed my passenger seat and rear bench at the track last time.

I had a g-force ECU before I got the JWT one so I didn't really have any torque loss from the MEVI, I just wanted the extended redline.

97blackSE Nov 19, 2003 06:16 AM

impressive, esp for an auto....Good luck man, may the VQ be with you

JeffesonM Nov 19, 2003 01:34 PM

carbon fiber hood would cut a few pounds

Put AGX on 1F/8R, swap out the RVM for a Definitive or UR (lighter), mandrel bent b-pipe, remove RSB/FSTB for the track and get slicks... :o

SXN Nov 19, 2003 03:58 PM

i wouldnt spend the extra money for the new under drive pulley, unless you could get a could resell price...standard weight reduction stuff so far

Jay_pee99 Nov 19, 2003 08:18 PM

Damn 97's, are they ever going to make a chip for this thing?!

SXN Nov 19, 2003 08:29 PM

or 98s  i wont tolerate a constant CEL

Phatmax98 Nov 19, 2003 09:09 PM

Hey, just turbo charge it and own some ppl...don't be scared...you'll be happier with the results in the long run.

kenji Nov 19, 2003 09:37 PM

until it breaks

SXN Nov 20, 2003 03:52 PM

if you get a researched/not crappy turbo kit, it wouldn't break the car, engine, trans, etc

where did you get a 70mm TB?

how many MM is the pathfinder one? did he port one out?

this is a very hard decision in my opinion if I was in your shoes. I am yet to see a auto maxima running 13's. That auto tranny is very very heavy. Dont know if you have lift one up before but the thing is heavy period. You probably spend way over a grand beefing up that tranny and still carry that heavy weight around. I know you know weight counts. For under $1500 you can do a 5 speed swap with good clutch and flywheel. I know I have almost all the parts for a 5 speed swap on my other auto maxima. I say do a 5 speed swap and I know you can get into the 13NA and later on Boost it. You can boost it but I dont think that tranny will be able to hold more then 8PSI before it croaks out on you.

those guys are all boosted I seen Jimes numbers, he runs 12's. One of the names you mention aboved built a tranny and broke on him:confused: I thought they were suppose to hold up pretty well for the the type of money spent I think a 5 speed would have been the best route. Does Jime go out and run often? I dont know. I know he plays hard on the track.

What about some NA maximas auto maximas? Did I miss any?

SXN Nov 21, 2003 03:57 PM

autos usually just arent made to handle that much power...makes me sad because i love my auto, and autos in general :D
