'99 Owners: What don't you like about your '99 Max?

What are some of the things that you don't like about your 1999 Maxima?
This excludes Any performance related mods.

DAVE Sz Feb 5, 2004 07:51 PM

How is this different from asking what 4th gen owners don't like about their 4th gen max? I wish I had a '99(might very, very soon) but how is it different from any other 4th gen, besides the cosmetic differences?

my99maxisnice Feb 5, 2004 07:52 PM

Low mileage

That is about going to be the only positive difference.

Jr'sMaxima Feb 5, 2004 08:56 PM

I dont think there are any except MOD wise.

Nismo3112 Feb 5, 2004 09:19 PM

I love my 99 Max. I only wish it was RWD V8 400hp, etc....

MaximamixaM Feb 5, 2004 09:38 PM

I've heard the coil packs suck this year.
And the key with the security system in it will probably cost alot if I want to make duplicates-anybody had them programmed or know how much keys cost? Otherwise, great car.

my99maxisnice Feb 5, 2004 09:49 PM

yeah like 75 for me
something like that

BuNGsVQ Feb 5, 2004 10:16 PM

keys...they suck...stupid chips

finny Feb 5, 2004 10:16 PM

keys and being cali spec is the main things i hate

Jr'sMaxima Feb 5, 2004 11:02 PM

Mines not Cali spec, not ALL SE-L's were keep in mind.....just most.

paulsfds Feb 5, 2004 11:50 PM

it has funky sized nuts for the front struts and it makes very difficult to install a fstb

I am not hating other 4th gen's ('95-'98). It's just that I've been hearing negative feedbacks on the '99s on few threads relating to performance mod and "coil" issues.
So i was wondering what other problems the '99 owners have to deal with.

fisher01 Feb 6, 2004 05:22 AM

The 2 most common issues with the 99 are the replacement of coil packs and the tripping of the security system (causing car not to start). TSB's were issued by Nissan on these items.

- I don't like the screw used to get codes out of the ECU.
- I haven't had any problems with the NVIS system, but it will be costly if I do.

Stock, other that that I have _no_ problems with it. I wish I could get an aftermarket ECU, but that's my only real complaint overall.

billy_corgan Feb 6, 2004 05:50 AM

stupid microscopic screw in ECU and no ECU upgrade

BLACKICE99 Feb 6, 2004 06:16 AM

I have had the same problem, engine wouldn't start

Had to reprogram key, towing fee and labor $$$

Now my coilpacks new to be replaced $$$$$$$$$

other than that money in the bank

MrEous Feb 6, 2004 06:33 AM

Non-performance there isn't anything I don't like. This thread sucks. What true non-performance items are only on a '99 compared to other 4th gens?

Who would complain about having an SE-L? Who would complain about having titanium package? That's pretty much the only non-performance difference.

davy vain Feb 6, 2004 06:36 AM

Not sure if this is '99 vs. '97 or '99 ES vs. '97GXE, but the steering wheel on my '99 ES does not adjust as high as in the '97 GXE. For most, this isn't a problem, but as a taller individual, it is a bit of a pain in the ***.

slfalco Feb 6, 2004 08:10 AM

Stupid ticking noise from blower motor, bad coils (all 6 now replaced), 2 of 4 O2 sensors replaced (at 60K miles).... Clutch makes moaning sound sometimes (always did, many of these cars do it)... Otherwise a solid car...

Brudaddy Feb 6, 2004 08:35 AM

MaximamixaM, My key was also like $65 or $70.

Jr'sMaxima, I have a FED spec too. They are great and less to worry about than the Cali.

paulsfds, I agree. I ended up using a crescent wrench to get the nuts off to put on my FSTB. In the how to section, I printed off directions for installation. Well, they said to use 19mm socket....19mm socket does not fit the nut on the 1999.5. I don't know why they said it does.

billy_corgan, I totally agree....not having an upgrade for the ECU sucks!!!

At the same time, MrEous it totally right. There is not really anything besides not liking the titanium package that is different about the 1999, excluding the performance, that is. I personally love the titanium package. Not too different, but noticeably so.

and.......
davy vain, What the heck is a 99 ES?

canadian model...

MrEous Feb 6, 2004 08:53 AM

99 ES is to Canadians as the 99 SE is to Americans.

99 ES comes with LSD trannies if I'm not mistaken.
(boooo!!!)
lol

It is Canadian but there is also an SE model here in the north. Basically, the major differences between the ES and the SE are that the ES has cloth seats, no sunroof, no spoiler. It does have the LSD trannie and the traction control.

JJmax Feb 6, 2004 02:39 PM

I didn't know that the ES was just a Canadian model, do they have 99 gxe's? because the sales rep at the nissan dealship just said they replaced the gxe with the es, and that it was not a good seller. And where are se-l's made, cause they are not in canada, and the only time i saw them was when i was in Arizona on a family vacation. ( it was the first max i saw, and i got pretty mad/jelious)

TAPOUT Feb 6, 2004 02:40 PM

The only things that I am upset about with my 99 is with performance upgrades. The big problem is no ECU upgrade, and lots of work to do the SC or turbo. With the Cali Spec car, I had to send back the first Y-pipe they sent to switch with the correct one. Also upset that they changed the type of LED in the rear door switches, so my fronts are now blue, and back are still green. Low mileage is funny because I am at 115K and still running strong. I do need a new O2 sensor now, but it runs fine without it. I'm doing the valve body upgrade next week, and I need to buy a couple of solenoids just for precautionary measures that are $150 each, but this car is fast, looks good, and is reliable as anything I've ever owned.
