What's your IDLE

Just out of curiousity, but what does your car idle at? this might have been discussed in previous threads, but my search function doesn't work, so i figure i'd ask...

IDLE: when you come to a red light, and take a look at where your RPM meter is reading...

Mine: 600 RPM... is that low?

tlrmax Feb 17, 2004 02:46 PM

Mine is 1500rpm when I put in clutch then drops to 900rpm for idle. Not natural but it ha been doing that for a couple years

Kevlo911 Feb 17, 2004 02:46 PM

What matters is neutral IDLE. When your car is in neutral, autos should be at 750 +-50

ManualMaxima Feb 17, 2004 03:08 PM

i am at around 650 to 700 on my 5 speed.

CullenJ76 Feb 17, 2004 03:19 PM

always at 625 on my 5 speed :grinno:

TooMAX Feb 17, 2004 08:52 PM

Stock spec is 650 rpms, but mine is happier at 700 or so.

eckohb Feb 17, 2004 08:56 PM

im at about 750 in my auto

Conrad283 Feb 17, 2004 08:57 PM

600 rpm ...

DoGGy Feb 17, 2004 09:05 PM

my auto idles at 850 when its warm. is this normal?

optimus310 Feb 17, 2004 09:07 PM

600 and like 800-900 with A/C on

InfamousG Feb 17, 2004 09:15 PM

My idle at neutral is 700 RPM give or take, but when i have it in drive and pull up to a red light its like 400 Rpm or less, :gotme:. Im auto

Ceasars Chariot Feb 17, 2004 09:15 PM

600 rpm.....

Phatmax98 Feb 17, 2004 09:19 PM

680 at regular idle, with AC 700 to 900.
Do you have the automatic Climate Contorl, if you do, don't use the "auto"(Auto turns the AC on so your windows don't fog up. This will use more gas and will raise the RPM) botton for the car climate use the "eco" (eco stands for Economic less gas), it will drop your Idle. Or if you took your car to dealer ship have them diagnoisis, they probably changed the Idle Speed.

850 is not bad for neutral in a auto but a little high for 'D' idle. You could turn the idle control screw (located next to the throttle body, the little plastic screw) clockwise to slow down your rev's to save a tiny bit on gas, buts its all personal pref.

Mines 785 in neutral in my automatic and in Drive, at a stop lights its 675'ish and seems to be running happy. I'm getting a nice 450 miles per gallon on the highway so its not running worse.

My idle when first starting and warming up at P is around 1300 and then 1000 at a stop light. I have noticed the gas mileage is really poor (just bought the car a few weeks ago). What does this mean? Should I be concerned?

Do what Xugg says,

Should the screw be turned while the car is running to monitor how much you're changing the rpm? Can it be reversed if I turn it too much? What else does this effect besides mileage?

Yes, turn it while running the engine. You will hear it slow down a tiny bit as you turn it.

Yes, its reversable. Easy as turning it counterclock wise to run faster, and vis versa to run slower.

The screw only controls how much air is being by-passed around the throttle body plate, more air = fast idle speed.

When releasing the clutch from 2nd gear while slowing down, does the idle drop below 600 RPMs? The idle on my car will drop to 500 RPMs when the clutch is depressed but will resume normal idle at 600 (at least that's normal for my car). Any ideas would be helpful.

Thank you Xugg! I did it this morning and now when it's warming up (I'm talking below-zero mornings here in IA) rpm is still 1300 but at stop lights when it's warmed up, it's around 600-700 and not 1000 anymore. I'm very happy with the warm idle but is the 1300 cold unusual?
Thanks again

600rpm idle here...smooth...cannot even tell car is running except for common problem of slight Nissan belt squeel.

Also that damn ticking noise comming from the VQ engine

Wisky97SE Feb 18, 2004 01:46 PM

650RPM . .. no problems with my idle.

Brudaddy Feb 18, 2004 01:48 PM

I don't ever hear much of a ticking. However, no matter how much belt stop squeal you put on it, it only lasts a couple of days. It must just be a Nissan thing, because I have hears others doing a similar thing.

MaxiSpeed97 Feb 18, 2004 02:08 PM

640-680rpm (i'm manual)

It's pretty normal. If you get an UDP it gets worse :goofy:
