Over-assisted 1996 GXE 5 spd ??

Hi guys, first post, but certainly not the last one. I just bought a very nice 1996 Maxima, had a really good deal on it. It's a 1996 GXE 5spd. I have had 3 nissans before and I really like the cars. (2 NX2000 and 1 240SX) My problem is really simple (if it really is a problem...), the car seems really over assisted, the steering wheel is really light. I know it's supposed to be variable power assist but wether i'm on the highway or in a parking lot, it's always the same. I'd love for the steering to become harder on the highway but it doesn't. Is it normal ? How can I verify this ? I seem to recall driving a 1995 GLE and seeing the difference...

Let me know !!

yeah, coming from a 240 to a maxima myself, i noticed this too, it takes some getting used to. but the 240's steering is pretty tight all around, thats why you feel the max's so much different, dont worry

My 96 gle steering is kinda light too. I've heard others complaining of this, with all 4th gen. years. I think its just one of those annoying things about the Maxima, but all cars have something like that. Good buy though.

I think they sorta fixed it for the 99's. I know for a fact that the steering on my parent's 2k2 SE is much firmer, feels great IMO.

mine feels like a 5th gen cause i replaced my rack&pinion with one from a 5th gen max and now sterring is firmer but turning radius got bigger.
