What's involved in painting the engine cover?
 

I want to paint my engine covr. Can I use regular brake caliper paint or do I have to use a special engine paint. Can someone give me some details on the kind of paint I have to use and the process in painting it (prep and procedure)

Engine Cover? Do you mean that lil valve cover thing that says NISSAN 3000 on it? If so that thing doesn't get as hot as the actual engine itself I dont think... Everytime I open the hood and touch it its not very hot.

That's from an accord forum where this guy painted a 2.2 cl valve cover and put it on his accord. Looked pretty cool to me and it sounds like he knew what he was doing. Hope that helps.

regular brake caliper paint will be fine. i painted my cylinders, calipers, valve cover, strutbar, hood stick, other various rice parts all with single can of high-temp coat brake caliper. $2.99 a can, good deal.

any type of painting requires articulous cleaning prep. just make sure your surface is clean. then put couple coat over whatever item you are painting.
1st coat: lightly spray and pray
dry
2nd coat: medium spray and pray
dry
3rd coat: final coating, make sure the finish is nice and clean
make sure the entire unit is dry completely

What the hell is pray dry?

I used Engine Brite degreasing spray to clean it, then rinsed with water and dried. Then I sprayed the entire piece with 3-4 (can't remember) coats of white high temp paint. I decided to go with a two-tone look, so I masked the inset V6 3000 part with tape and covered Nissan with petroleum jelly (there's probably a better way of masking, but this was pretty quick and turned out decently). Then I sprayed everything with 3-4 coats of red high temp paint. Here's how it turned out (forgive the rest of the engine being incredibly ugly and dirty, I really need to spend some time on it once the weather is nice):

I used some fusion paint for plastic. I can't remember who makes it but you can get it at walmart or anywhere. It dries fast and is made just for plastic so it won't chip or anything. Works really well so far. :thumbsup:

business, your cover looks soooo nice, thats what im doing, red and white two tone :)

i used break caliper paint......it works the good. also painted other stuff, like grills and stuff cause it sticks very well.

here is a pic...it has been changed to black and the 3000 part silver. and it is going all chrome.....trying to get out of ricing...but it is so hard!!!

thanks guys, that guys honda cover looks so good. im doing mine blue with the two tone thing like the guy with the red engine did.
