Breaking Stuff!
Has anyone else broken one of those tiny studs when replacing the T-stat on your Max? Do Stealerships carry replacements? Any tips or tricks?
Thanks. :grinno: |

What tiny stud are you talking about? there are 3 bolts that need to come off to remove the old thermostat... (other than the radiator hose, etc.)...
|
Yes I was talking about the Thermostat. On my mom's '96, the housing is held on by 3 10mm nuts on studs. if you're looking at the housing from the front of the engine, it's the top right one that broke. it sheared off flush with the housing, so once I get it off, ther should be an inch or so of the stud to grab onto and try to get it out. I just want to make sure I have new studs before I try and take the other two out.

hmm... sorry I can't help you with that... the bolts came right off for me... You will probably have to soak the bolt who's head sheared off with a penetrant (PB blaster, liquid wrench, etc.) and let it sit for a while... then just try use pliers to get a good bite and get it off...
Anyone else have any ideas on how to get this out? |
Drill out the center of the bolt and use an 'easy out'. That's about the best suggestion I can make.
Or, use a dremel tool (with a curring wheel) and cut a slot in the bolt big enough for a flathead screwdriver and get it out that way. |
Thanks for the suggestions, but my biggest concern is being able to find replacements. I don't want to call the stealership and have them tell me I'm SOL!

Dunno about that dude, I'd call the dealer and find out. Worst case, you'd have to find one at home depot or a hardware store ...
