quick question about the "oven method"
I completely understand how to do the clear tail mod, I've got all the parts... got my tools lined up next to me, sharpened up two chisels to make prying a cinch, but just one question.
Both the how-to's posted on this forum both use the heatgun method, but people's posts always say the oven method is MUCH better; which i can understand why and will do myself; but thats all they say about it. I wont have a heat gun on hand (well i could if i went by my work, but traffic is horrendous) so after you make the new clear insert what do you do about re-sealing the cover piece of the entire assembly... will the glue/sealent substance need to be reheated in the oven (if so, just the back piece or all the pieces) before putting them back together. And, if i happen to get some of that goop crap onto the lense or any other piece will some general purpose goop removing cleaners work |
bump, i kinda need to know quick!

i used my oven on my tails. set it to 200* F or a bit less and heated up one at a time. I put it in for 7 minutes and checked the glue...not hot enough so i checked them every 2 more minutes until i could pry them apart by hand. I think it was 11 minutes before i could pull them apart a bit and then more heat to keep opening them slowly. I got all my lights apart by hand, no broken parts, no melted lights, and no burnt hands. Caution: I melted plastic cornerlights because i left them unattended. 15 minutes at 220*f was too much. The goo is not bad at all, the black sealant is much more messy. Oops! cleans everything up great. I would get more clear silicone to seal the lights compleatly.
