New to Maxima's can someone help me?
 

I am looking for a newer car and will be going to test drive and possible buy a 96 GLE soon. But what I was wondering is, how many miles are these things capable of going, how long do they last? Are they like some of the Toyotas that can go 200,000 plus miles?

Yes the maxima is very capable of going way beyond 200,000. Alot of the people here have high mileage and dont experience many problems. The engine has won a bunch of awards and is very reliable. I have a 96 SE and I'm coming up on 100,000 miles and i havent had any problems and only had to do basic maintenance.

Yes some max's have been known to go up to 500,000 miles.

But Im really sure if the car has been taken care of you will get over 200k out of it.

I also have a '96 GLE, bought it (my own money) right before I got my license, with 78,500 miles 2 years ago, and now its creepin' up on the century mark.

Saw a few other 96's on the lot that had 200K+ miles on them. Saw one with 305,000 miles on it. They go forever. Can't go wrong with a 96.

i have a 99 maxima with 123k still runs like new

Well I don't know how relevant this is but my previous 89 maxima was at 211k miles when I sold it AND the odometer wasn't working for about 6 months. The engine was running fine but I did have tranny problem, what do you expect it was still original one.

It depends on how good the previous owner took care of the car. I got one of those "dealer's special of the week" cars and I've been having problems :(

Major stuff: Axles, Tires, A/C Pulley & Belt, Suspension (struts, springs, boots, front mounts & bearings, and alignment), Transmission Rebuilt, Battery, and Alternator. Going to replace the oxygen sensors & y-pipe soon and going to be redoing the brakes with new calipers in a few weeks. So far it's been ~$2500 in repairs (tranny rebuild was $1000 by itself and the suspension stuff came out to around $500 plus $150 installation).

The engine won't be a problem, but the transmission might be depending on the previous owner(s).

Good thing is that the car will last for the next 4-5 years until I'm out of college :thumbsup:

It all depends on how well the car was taken care of. I had a 98 GMC sonoma before my maxima. In the six months I owned the truck I spent over $3500 repairing it. There was all kinds of electrical stuff that went wrong, suspension, exhaust, and a $700 clutch. That thing was always in the shop. It only had 111,000mi
But, my girlfriend has a Chevy Blazer, she has 166,000mi on hers and it is running perfect.
My Maxima has 105,000mi and all I've done is new tranny and clutch. Not too bad for a 9 year old car.

They are definitely capable of lasting that long. YOu just have to take care of it. The award-winning VQ30DE can handle a lot of usage.

Remember, if you are wanting a little more performance(which is what the VQ can offer), look for a 5spd. YOu will be much happier with your choice of a 5spd, if you are pretty performance minded.
