Lysol isn't working - air vents still smell! help!
 

Per other members' advice, I tried spraying a can of lysol into my air vent, but I'm still getting this musky, moldy smell.

I've tried spraying the vents in front of my windshield with the heat on, turned to different levels, but it doesn't seem to help. Is there a liquid solution I can try, or is there something I can buy to remedy this. I don't like driving with my windows open on the highway cause it's just too loud! Thanks!

You need to first make sure your AC drain hose is not clogged. There is a tube that comes through the firewall near the passenger side of the car (mid way down).. it will be just hanging loose... that is probably clogged - so you are getting water stuck in the condensor - which is where the bad smell is coming from. Clean out that tube with a wire-hanger/compressed air... run the air for 10 mins, you should see water dripping out of there... if you do, then you are ok... now retry the lysol method.. it will take a few days for all that mildew to completely die... the other thing to do is to run the temperature on hot (with the AC on) for a while... helps dry out all the components.

Another thing is if you have the auto climate control, when it is on A/C and all the way cold (65F) it will automatically select recirculate and no fresh air or Lysol will get in from outside. You then need to increase the temp to the point where it starts to draw air from the outside.

I recently had to remove my evaporator(part that gets cold) and you would not believe the amount of dirt, dust and lint gets stuck in the fins, not to mention the mildew growing on that stuff. It's a wonder air still gets through. If you want to do a very thorough but pretty tough job, you can remove the fan assembly and clean out the evaporator with a brush and then spray lysol on it.
