How long did/is your transmission lasting?
#5
200k is pretty impressive man.... how many GM, Ford or Dodge cars do you know that make it that far consistently? to me it just seems that jap cars last that longer than most but to me (and I am relatively inexperienced) it is pretty rare in the car industry as a whole
and i didn't mean that I was worried it wouldn't last a long time, just kinda wanted to poll everyone and see when they ran into problems (and I dont abuse it)

What problems did u have in your 97 5speed before u totaled it?

My 96 SE 5 speed has almost 109K miles and I haven't had any problems. It shifts fine and engages fine with no grinding. I'm still on the orginal clutch too which has never slipped and has faced over 150 1/4 mile passes and 4000+rpm launches. When this thing breaks, I can't be mad at Nissan for it. It's been through a lot in it's 8 years of life.
We have about 20 Maxima owners in the immediate KC area with the majority being 4th gens. I can't think of a single Maxima in the group (3rd thru 5th gen) that has a had tranny problem or any other significant problem.

I don't want to comment on my transmission's condition because with my luck lately, I'll say something here and it'll fall out when I get in to go to work tomorrow.
let's just say it's got almost 98,000 miles on it.

I don't know anything about domestics, since I've never owned one. But I do know that I've never had a transmission problem on any of my Japanese cars, most of which lasted 160 - 200k. I'm runnin 93k on my Max with no hiccups so far.

133,780 on original trans. then the axle seal slipped off and all the fluid drained out while I was driving and it had no choice but to go kerclunk. she's at the shop right now getting a new trans with 47k on it, $2000 later... *sigh*
**EDIT**
sorry, I have a 5-spd

These 4th gen. trannies, especially manuals, seem to be hit or miss. Either you have a reliable, long lasting transmission, or you have an extremely problematic, in need of replacement transmission, which is my case. Thank god for my warranty (I just bought the car). Good luck with your swap, Whirlwind...hope it works out.

93k miles on my 99/5spd. I drive like a granny compared to most other folks here, so if it breaks anytime soon (or even if the clutch goes) I'll be upset to say the least.

I'm about to hit 190,000 miles this week on my 96...and all I've ever done is change the fluid & filter every so often. As far as I'm concerned, if you maintain a transmission well and don't abuse it, it should never have to be replaced or rebuilt.

Very interesting subject. I've seen a 95 GLE at my inlaw shop not too long ago with 247,XXX miles on it, and the reason it was at the shop b/c it couldn't go faster than 30 MPH. After the owner paid my bro $900 Dollars, she took off just like any other Maxs. BTW, my is 122,XXX on it right now, it's still strong and smooth like the day I bought it.

My odometer reads 134k but its been broken now for over 2 months. It was replaced new when the original went at 67k miles. I drive approx 100 miles/day, 5 days a week, so I put about 2000 miles on my car a month.
This 96 max se is my daily driver and is on the original engine (no smoke, no oil usage), and the original tranny. The tranny has a few minor issues I can live with, but runs well and cruises great at highway speeds Still, over 200k on the car and even the AC works well. I am the 3rd owner of this vehicle, but the lady before me owned it since 50k miles and she said they never had any major work done on it.

127,XXX miles Auto
Mostly city driving
A previous owner (92 Max.) mentioned typical auto max tranny will go out around 160,000 miles. If that's the case, than I have around 30k to go and a year and half to have full use of it. Let's hope that's not the case. Running mobile 1 and planning to change it every 5k.

my 96 with 126K shifts just like my 99 with 65K. in a head to head race it was a dead heat.
If you take care of it by changing the fluid as directed it should last a long time. I asked this same question before i bought that 96...it has 98K on the clock when i bought it. I flushed it myself and switched to Mobil synthetic and its been great.

my mom bought the car, and the tranny went out @ 36k miles...
it was like a few hundred miles over warantee...but they just charger her for labor...shot the tranny for free..
now its got ~120k on the odo. subtract 36k miles and thats the life of the tranny..
other than that lemon tranny, its runner perfect right now..

189,300 just passed, still on original tranny. Running strong, and with the DR mod on a switch since about 175,000 miles. It's not showing any signs of slippage or anything. I'll keep my fingers crossed, and hope that I get it up to 250,000.
