Optima Battery!!

Do you need anything special to install an optima battey...i think the terminals are flopped from stock so do you just need longer extensions......

Chunger 07-30-2004 12:49 PM

The yellowtop fits fine... the terminals on top aren't at the extreme edges... cables reached fine with the sidepost side facing the front of the car.

is this a good upgrade? any noticable changes from stock batter?

Tyrexx 07-30-2004 01:02 PM

optimas fit right in, get a dualpost. They are just better overall and you wont have to worry about them crapping out. They work so awesome in winter too. I have the best red top.

Nick7455 07-30-2004 01:37 PM

I just bought the red top...im still a car noob so how do you use the dualpost ones?

chris j vurnis 07-30-2004 04:08 PM

I put in a red-top in my car yesterday. I have a '95. There is enough slack in the positive and negative leads to hook them up without any problems.

I had to add some washers as spacers for the battery "tie-down" since the red-top is shorter than most conventional batteries.

Nick7455 07-30-2004 04:50 PM

Yea the tie down didn't fit on mine either.....i just found out these batteries are manufactured like 3 mins from my house!! What a crazy thing......anyways this solved all the problems I had last night so I guess the old battery only lasted 2 years.....but I didnt purchase it....guy before me did....oh well im happy with my red top now :grinno:

Tyrexx 07-30-2004 05:48 PM

there are a few diff. tiedowns that look really nice if you want to show off your engine bay.

naijai 07-30-2004 05:49 PM

where can yu get the battery sites?

Tyrexx 07-30-2004 05:50 PM

Just turn your OEM top bar over and put it down the "wrong" way then tighten the wing nuts on it...you'll see what I mean.

Red top has been great for me for the last 3 years...its great in the winter. No maint and in my previous car I had it relocated to the trunk...its a perfect option for a trunk batt.

Terran 07-30-2004 06:43 PM

So what are the differences and advantages/disadvantages of the red top vs. yellow top?

Red top is good for most of us...little more CCA than the yellow top. Yellow top is a deep cycle so you can drain it if you like to listen to your stereo without the car on.

I have a blue top. The cables will fit because the optimas are a couple inches shorted than regular batteries. There is a clip on the side of the battery tray that is holding your positive cables. Just unclip it and the cable will move freely enough to reach the battery post. To fill in the gap without using spacers for the tie down just cut a piece of 1/2 in or 3/4 in wood the size on the battery tray and put it under the battery. This will insure a secure fit and you can use your stock tie down without any mod.

Can't say enough good stuff about those. I took my redtop out about 3 months ago. It was just sitting in the garage. My little Genesis battery died on me after returning from vacation. We'll I jumped the Max with the old Optima on the second crank. Who would've thought.
