Ok I wanted to get xenon's, BUT I'm worried - read USA Today

It's amazing how xenons make car thieves go crazy:

"The Nissan Maxima's fancy headlights have made it such a target for thieves that Maxima's rate of insurance theft claims has gone from inconsequential to second-highest among all vehicles, according to a report out Tuesday. "

"Maxima's high-intensity-discharge (HID) headlights, the icy-blue lights sometimes called xenon lights, are considered a status symbol because HID lights are usually found on luxury or high-performance cars. Nissan made HID lights standard on 2002 Maximas to give them an extra selling point against rivals."

"The lights can be installed on older models, and the HID bulbs can be removed from the light assemblies and used in other vehicles.

The problem's so bad that Nissan sent owners a letter telling them that dealers will install free brackets "to make the headlights more difficult to steal," says Nissan spokesman Kyle Bazemore.

Most light thefts take place in the Northeast, so Nissan has supplied New York and New Jersey police with decoys to lure and trap thieves, Bazemore says.

Sometimes the whole car is stolen, apparently just for the lights because those are all that's missing when the cars are found. Other times, only the lights are taken. Either way, it generates a theft claim, according to the report from the Highway Loss Data Institute."

To me, it's like killing an elephant (an amazing create) only for its tusks.
ANyway, here's the link guys: http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/...ft-rates_x.htm

I just find it interesting. I would shell out money for HID's etc. but I want to hear your feedback, what do you think?

u know u love me :)

sunysb83 Oct 19, 2004 12:54 PM

well, depends on what year max it is, i don't think its a prob on the 4th gens unless u show it, the xenons are only in the 2k2+, and i've seen it more than once around brooklyn missing both headlights off those maxes

NmexMAX Oct 19, 2004 12:55 PM

One thing to note, the 4th gen did not come stock with these, so unless a thief singles out your car and followed you home or wherever you parked, he will be in for a big surprise if he tries to steal any other forth gens headlights and will probably be a bit unhappy with his steal.

Interesting article.
Thanks for sharing.

hey this is for the fifth gens only. I remember seeing a dealership's lot ful of eye-less maximas. There was a safety recall and now they are secured better. 4th gens dont have much to worry about, unless you're making enemies.

kcryan Oct 19, 2004 01:56 PM

why is this in a fourth gen forum then? i feel like im missing somthing

97WhtSE Oct 19, 2004 02:26 PM

yeah thats so true. Arrafios car was missing the wheels, tv's and guess what? Headlights and fog lights were in the front passenger side without the HID's from what ive seen in the pictures.

lol...exactly, thanks. Anyway, thanks for all your responses - maybe I don't have much to worry about after all. We'll see :doublethu

Hey guys, I want the 5th gen headlights. Can I get these on without any body work???

Maximus_95 Oct 19, 2004 05:17 PM

yeah, dont worry too much. but you know that everytime you are away from your car, there is always a risk for something happening to it.

Vaudeville Villain Oct 19, 2004 05:43 PM

Damn, the Max was #2 on the list between the Escalade EXT and original Escalade. Is the Honda theft craze over??

Linkage23 Oct 19, 2004 05:47 PM

I like seeing the Maixima getting attention...too bad its for a negative reason :P

Jade95Maxima Oct 19, 2004 06:08 PM

all those damn robbers finally wised up and decided to steal a car worth stealing. but *knock on wood* it doesn't happen to me.

Keyser Skoze Oct 19, 2004 06:16 PM

Yea but isnt it harder to steal the headlights from the 4th gen then the 02? I mean when i installed my HID's (from an X5) it wasnt that easy to take everything apart.

Linkage23 Oct 19, 2004 06:18 PM

good call Today, Keyser Skoze, goooood call!

amulla01 Oct 19, 2004 06:23 PM

The geniuses at Nissan shouldve included the brackets... the reason they get stolen so much is because Maxima's with hid lights are the easiest to take out... just pick with a screw driver and it will fall out... its too tempting for thieves to overlook an easy target.

1996blackmax Oct 19, 2004 09:41 PM

I was reading the same thing in my local newspaper. I did not expect to see the Maxima in the #2 spot.
