starting problems

whats up,
just got a 95 maxima yesterday from a family member and it is having troubles starting. when i try it just clicks and doesnt try to turn over. i just keep turning the key till it starts. i think it may be a starter switch just wanted to know if anyone else has had this happen.
thanks

if it clicks then your starter relay works, check the ground to the starter, had the same problem with my old car

well i should clarify this it doesnt even really click, just nothin till it actually starts. i found some posts on here about the ignition switch and think this may be it but if anyone has any other ideas it may help

Check your battery.

check battery, check solenoid if it just clicks, thats part of the starter in case you are not aware. if it only cranks, but cranks as if it has power, then check the crankshaft position sensors, theres 2 of them, if not them then check the camshaft position sensors.

ok, well im pretty sure its not the starter b/c it doesnt do anything when i turn the key but power up everything. so the battery should be ok as it is fairly new anyways. like i said before i just keep turning the key sometimes only two times sometimes more until it starts. when i turn the key the starter isnt doing anything but when it does start it starts right up. im guessing it may be the ignition switch or some kind of starter relay switch. guessing no one else really has had this problem.

I have the exact same problem occasionally on my '95 GXE. I just try again, pushing in on the key and turning hard to start. I remember reading about this ignition switch quirk somewhere, but can't remember where. The fix could be to disassemble the switch (if possible) and clean the internal contact surfaces.

My '95 SE has the same problem sometimes, the first time I go to turn it on nothing happens but everything comes on, I hit it again and it fires right up and runs like a champ...
Just wanted to let you know you're not the only one, unfortunatley I don't have a fix because it's not enough of an issue to warrant my attention right now...
Oh yeah, and I'm broke too, so I can't afford to fix it :)

yea check the ignition swich then , my gf car has tha same problem you really have to push the key a lot when u start it , it almost feels like im bending the key lol

If it clicks it may also be the battery or the starter going bad. Its really hard to tell without out checkign to see if your battery is charged. On my car the battery wasnt holding a charge so it would have just barely enough to start the car but only after a few cranks. I went ahead and changed my starter when I replaced the battery and found that it was still giving me a hard time starting.

Also check the cam sensor, it may cause hard starting as well.

like Ant said camshaft position sensor, also check the crankshaft position sensors, clean them off and put them back in, make sure theres no metal shavings on them.
