Spark plug install = car won't start...HELP

Alright, I replaced the front 3 plugs in the front without a problem, and was then able to change all of them in the back except the left rear. I couldn't get the socket down onto the spark plug and so I looked down the shaft with a flashlight. At the bottom there were a few small pieces of plastic that was stopping the socket from going all the way down. I was able to get one of the pieces out but not all 3 yet. I need to drive my car to get some where and so I just put the coil packs back together to see if I could get the car running on 5 new plugs and one old. The car will not start. I got it to start once and it was running very rough. I turned it off and it will not start again. Any ideas on what the problem might be??

u probably didnt connect all of the coils or u didnt tighten all of them down...

yes i did do both...checked twice

The only thing you touched that would make the car not start would be the coil packs, unless you did something else your not saying.

Even with 1 or even 2 coils out the car will still start... maybe you took off the intake and didnt put it back on properly? :gotme:

Are the plugs you used gapped correctly?

99 SE-L Nov 29, 2004 02:54 PM

LOL im bout to change my spark plugs in 1 hr or so well see how it goes

-MaxPayne- Nov 29, 2004 03:18 PM

the plugs were pre gapped and i checked the gapping as well

Put it this way, you did something wrong.

Explain how it sounds when you try to start it, hesitates, doesn't even make a noise etc etc.

I got it to start two more times and then stopped working again. It sounds like it's trying to start, but no spark maybe? no sense though, all the coil packs are back in and plugged in, still no idea. It sounds like it would with a dead battery almost or dead fuel pump? it sat for a week without starting, would this contribute to fuel pump?

If it sat for a week, probably the battery needs a bit of charging, get it started by a boost and let it run for a while.

Did you mess with the AFM?

NYC_Maxima97 Nov 30, 2004 05:02 PM

It's gotta be the coils or the gapping on your plugs. Don't be looking for other things when it happened exactly after you changed 5 of the plugs and put the coils back. Recheck everything is on spec, and coils are in properly.

Could these same pieces of plastic that prevented you from getting the old spark plug out also preventing the coil pack from making contact with the spark plug?

NYC_Maxima97 Nov 30, 2004 06:46 PM

Now that's a great thought Batxel...

Maybe the plugs arent tightened and the coil packs arent makign contact wiht the plugs recheck everything there is a coil/plug problem since it happend right after u isntalled them.

I just replaced my plugs today, and I had the same problem with the rubber at the top of the spark plug. I could not get it out for awhile, but then stabbed into it with a long pointy object. I will have to replace it because it seems to be in bad shape, but everything went in fine. I got all the plugs in.
