Will an SE steering wheel from a 98-99 fit a 98-99 GXE airbag?

I know the SE airbag has the whole in the middle unlike the GXE/GLE airbags, but will the steering wheel from an SE fit the GXE/GLE airbags??? I can't remember if someone on here said it will work??

that is a good question always wondered about it.

nupe500 12-07-2004 06:09 AM

yes it will....been there done that

How hard is it to swap the steering wheel? I would really like to get an 97-99 SE steering wheel on my car.

Kingrukus,

its is quite simple...once the airbag is out..there is a 18mm/19mm bolt that holds on the steering wheel...and thats it...once removed...it is over and done with

Hmm...ok well maybe the bigger problem is removing the existing airbag then? Is it difficult to transplant the airbag from one wheel to the other?

Also what about the cruise control buttons? Is it a simple plug in harness that works on all wheels?

nupe500 12-07-2004 10:31 AM

removing the airbag is not tough if you have the torx bits....once you remove the cruise, its got u screws...phillips then unplugs...the wiring is all the same. Airbag should fit with no problem but most importantly, unplug your battery...for a bit, then go ahead and start dismantling the steering wheel/bag

me wondering too

BigLou93SE 12-07-2004 01:16 PM

yeah, I'm sure the '95/96'ers on here are wondering that too...is the 97-99 SE steering wheel thicker, or does it just look different?

ny96max 12-07-2004 01:25 PM

Don "Pearl96max" i believe had this swap done on his 96 max a while back...

...the wheel itself is much thicker and alot sportier looking compared to the 95-96 wheel.

yeah the se wheel rules

nupe500 12-08-2004 06:31 AM

I have the 97se wheel on my 95 gxe..(my sig) You will need to modify the 97 steering wheel in order to get it to fit the 95. The Airbag clock springs are different and you have to accomodate for that. I can't remember where the pics are that describe that, but its obvious when you have both steering wheels and the clock spring...

Slaytan69 12-08-2004 08:51 AM

how'd you get around that issue?

get a dremel, and continue to test fit until you've cut enough of the steel for proper fitment
