Extra Keys ripoff?
well i just found out im getting remote start for christmas
so i need to get a copy of my key for it and because of the chip in the key i need to get it from nissan i called and they told me that its $50-$70 for the key and then $90 for service i asked them why they needed to pay for service and they said they would need to reporgram both keys and then my mom wanted an extra key to have "just incase" so thats 3 keys they need to reprogram which i dont know if its going to be more. is this a ripoff? can i get the keys and do it myself?

If you want to get around the chip key thing, there is a way.
Duplicate the key at the hardware store. Then hide the original key in the car, next to the ignition switch.
Just take apart the plastic cover that surrounds the steering column, and hide the original key in the inside with some duct tape. Put the cover back on with the key inside.
As long as the original key stays in place near the switch, even though it is not in the cylinder, the car will start with a duplicate key. Just don't try starting the car with the duplicate unless the original is secured nearby. One try like this will cause a fault only the dealer can erase.

I paid 60 for the key and 40 for the programming....theyre jippin you because they have to reprogram all the keys no matter how many so its the same process if you replace one or two keys. You're going to need a bypass modula as well which won't come wit hthe remote start kit. You can get one for around $35 from Velocity Performance.

the car will not start without seeing the signal from the chip in the key. You have to put an actual key into the bypass kit to make it work. OR, there's a bypass kit that doesn't use the key, but you need a Nissan programming tool to program it, so you have to go to the dealer either way.

sounds about right, from a dealer atleast, thats about what i paid. one thing you could do is have a walmart key to keep w/ you, just to open the car doors or trunk, and that way if you lock your keys in the car you can get to them... but the price sound about right, atleast thats about what i paid.

ok buddy, hes getting a remote start, which automatically starts the engine, you cant go without actually inserting the key into the car, remote start is great for the winter so your car warms up while you get ready to go out or what not..
PROGRAMMING KEY- only 1999 maximas have this, 95-98 did not have the chip in the key, nissan started to put chips in the keys so that it would make it harder to steal, basically if you dont have the chip, the engine will not start.
bypass- is a little box where a programmed key is inserted so that when you initiate the remote start, the signal from the chip inside the key will be transmitted to the engines computer, which will allow the engine to start.
basically if you have a 99 its kind of annoying to actually get a remote starter, but its definitley conveniant

yea it aint cheap to do a 99, heres how my 2 way alarm-rem start panned out
alarm/rem. start - $75 off the truck
extra key - $100
bypass kit - $40
install labor - $200
I got a kick *** deal on the alarm and it still cost me over $400.

yeah im not getting the 2 way (its a xmas present) but i did get some discounts on labor and stuff because my brother works @ circut city
maybe ill try to call another dealer then i thought it was a lot too did you get it from nissan or another place?
oldngivout, the point of getting more keys is so if i lose one i will have a spare one and one for the bypass on my remote start i think taping my chip to my steering wheel is kinda pointless
prices do seem a lil high. i think i paid $40 for an extra key and $20 to have them programmed
