KYB GR2's

after my stupid drifting accident in the snow i needed to replace my fron strut.

so i decided to get the 2 front's new and leave the backs. my mechanic is putting on kyb gr2's with some lowering springs i allready had on there. he is charging me 250 for both stuts plus labor. are these good? i have tokio blues in the back. did i do the right thing?

Luigi38 Dec 23, 2004 11:48 AM

Most people would say to stick with the same struts all around.
Tokico blues are the same as stock and the gr2 are stiffer than the blues. Therefore you are gonna have a harsher ride in the front and the stock on the back. i personally would have bought blues for the front.
$250 for 2 struts is expensive, you can purchase 4 gr2 for around $200-220.
That is why i don't trust mechanics, they always try to rip you off and do ****ty jobs on top of that.

MDeezy Dec 23, 2004 11:53 AM

I agree with Luigi

for the amount he is going to charge you (not including labor) you could get a new set of 4 gr2's, then he didnt even add labor on top of that, hes trying to get some extra holiday money out of you.

MaximaSE96 Dec 23, 2004 01:03 PM

yay they are easy to do urself and can get way cheaper than that...

Ant96GLE Dec 23, 2004 01:28 PM

You should buy them and then have them installed.. even at that price thats ALOT.. Tom out in Jersey does all 4 for a fraction of that price.

rsly33 Dec 23, 2004 02:30 PM

exit10, how old are you? Im guessing you are 16 or 17 and these mechanics are just raping you because they think your just some punk kid who doesnt know any better. Read up on all these repairs you have to do first before you just go dumping money everywhere.

exit10 Dec 23, 2004 02:53 PM

yes i am 17.. i personally think 250 installed isnt really that bad. i know it is an easy job but i rahter not even bother bustin my azz in the cold weather.. if it was the summer or spring hell yea. he also charged me 200 for the new control arm + installation. so i am paying 450 for the entire job.... i wasnt in the mood to do it myself, i jsut wanted my car back as fast as i could get it back

Ant96GLE Dec 23, 2004 03:24 PM

I'm telling you, your getting ripped... Your better off talking to njmaxselmtd or whatever his name was... I know his name is Tom, hes in Ft Lee which is right off the GW Bridge. He only charges in the $100 to $200 range for ALL 4. And I know its nowhere near $200. Your much better taking the drive out there and saving a few hundred dollars even if it means driving an hour or so through traffic

MDeezy Dec 23, 2004 03:30 PM

he seems set on letting the mechani c do it, I say go for it you apparently dont have time to do it yourself, and NY and winter so its not enjoyable to be out trying to put new struts and springs on, espcially its holiday time, just pay for it, you've already learned your lesson and you know this is the price your paying for it, get the mechanic to do it and get your car back before christmas (if thats possible)

kool look forward to the pics, glad you car is back so soon after the accident. Shes home for christmas

You really should replace both front and rears with the same units. Your putting a GR2 which is a firm strut up front and keeping the softer stock replacement Tokico Blue in the rear. The ride and handling is going to be a bit weird. The front of your car is going to be very stiff, while the rear is gonig to be very soft. Thats going to create a lot of oversteer and a less then desireable ride.

Which springs are you using?

If you get the components you want, I'll install everything and set your camber for $125. You'll need to have an alignment shop set your front toe for around $50.

There is a web site with information on spring and strut combinations that you should review before making your purchase. Somebody please post the link, I don't have it saved. That way you'll get exactly what you want in the end.

Thanks guys, for plugging my services! :D

I'm one AGX's in the front and Illuminas in the rear. The ride is great.

I will be getting Illuminas for the fronts though to keep everything matched especially that I'm now planning on getting a set of wheels.

exit10 Dec 23, 2004 09:01 PM

ok i am really anal about this an im worried the ride will be shyty now. does ne one know where i can get 2 rear kyb gr2's (considering i have the 2 fronts) please post any links or refrences

exit10 Dec 24, 2004 04:16 PM

just got the car back. i think it handles even better. the wheels seem to be planted much better on the ground hence better traction. i am happy with the job that the mechanic did. i will take pics after i get a wash. :)

2 Da Max Dec 24, 2004 05:45 PM

hey!! u got the car fix.. congrats

MDeezy Dec 24, 2004 08:32 PM

congrats indeeed, seems like you didnt have to endure the pain of not having the car for a while.

and a better handling max came back to you enjoy, and be careful.

exit10 Dec 24, 2004 09:17 PM

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH i do have to endure the pain, as the day progressed around 4 hours after getting the car i hear this rough clicking noise coming from the front end. This noise only occurs when the wheel is turned slightly and it seems it clicks faster as i increase speed, and louder with more rotation of the wheel. i looked in either side of the wheel well and saw nothing bad only my nice new control arm and new kyb gr2's. the alignment is still off a little bit and i also felt that the wheel vibrates at speeds over 60mph.

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING 2 ME?

i think it can be a bad cv boot, rack and pinoin or somthing more simple. PLEASE help

keep in mind the stuts are brand new and so is the right control arm..

hmmmm

2 Da Max Dec 24, 2004 09:25 PM

cvas its a 100 for 2

exit10 Dec 24, 2004 09:34 PM
