Are wheel bearing issues common on 4th gens?

I've just recently been looking at buying a '97 SE and I have since found one that I might buy. I went for a test drive today and everything seemed good, except for a strange noise coming from the drivers side front wheel well. The sound was only noticeable at speeds over 10km/h and would get louder as I went faster, but not loud enough for you to hear with the radio on. It was like a constant whoosing sound.

I suspect that it might be a bad wheel bearing. How common is this on a 4th gen's and has anyone had to replace theirs? I'm going to get the car inspected by my mechanic, but I thought I'd get some suggestions first. The car has 100,000 miles on it.

As far as seeing threads about people having problems with them... its not a common problem.

I have a '95 Maxima & had to replace my driver's side front 2 months ago at 185,000 miles. I bought it with 111,000 miles on it, so I'm not sure if had ever been replaced.

Sometimes it's not the bearings at all, a worn or defective tire could simulate the same noise as a worn bearing.

How can you tell that you have a bad bearing?

I had my front left changed. The mechanic at Pep Boys showed me that my rotor moves side to side while the calipers were on. I dont know if he was right or if he wanted to charge me more money, while he was changing the CV.

How much are bearings anyway?

I had to replace my pass side front bearing not too long ago, 118k miles. It was making a really noticeable hum at speeds over 10mph.

It should cost around $200-$300 if you get someone to do it for you.

Where is the cheapest place to buy them? I think my right rear one is dead it sounds like bad tire noise when I make left turns, but the alignment was just done and the tires are fine.

Ever since I replaced my tires and my tire "hum" went away from the rear, I began to notice this slight groaning noise on my rear left side.. I wonder if this could be a bearign making this noise or maybe the rear claiper sticking..

the weird this is that it only happens on right turns.

Sorry to hijack the thread but what else besides a bearing issue can cause this type of noise in the rear.. since there are no axles and it only happens on a right turn?? Thanks in advance.

I think the humming noise that most people diagnose as bad bearings are actually noise from the tires. I had a humming noise from my left front wheel. When I changed the tires it went away. 133K on original bearings.

Do the rear wheels have bearings? Or just the fronts on the maxima?

yah defiantely sound like wheel bearings. Had the same horrible sound, and did the same as you... just turned up the radio so my ears wouldn't pop. I paid $638 to have both left and right changed. That price also included a new knock sensor installed and an oil change. The parts are not all that expensive, its just the long labor hours to have them installed. If it has 100,000+ probably needs to be changed. My mechanic suggested I change the rears soon also. This is going to run me about $320 installed both sides.

So there are no wheel bearings on the back wheels? If not, what in the back axle could be making this type of noise besides the tire or alignment?
