OH NO! What's wrong with my car???
 

Hi guys,

I'm hoping somebody can help me get some insight on what's going on with my car. Yesterday my check engine light came on. I figured it was no big deal, I'll pull the codes tomorrow and see what it says. Well I went to the gym in the morning and the car was fine. I get home and pull the codes and get 0505 which tells me absolutely nothing so I think everything is fine.

Tonight when I start my car it takes a lot of cranking to start and when it did start the idle is only at about 300 RPMs and is rough. It did the same thing after cutting it off for a few minutes and starting it back up to come home. Does anybody know what the problem might be? Thanks in advance.

that happened to me, mine was the MAF so I replaced that. Could be that or maybe you need to adjust your idle. Im no expert, but the a problem close to the same occured with mine.

It should give you a code if the CEL is on. 5spd or auto?

It's a 5-spd and I did get a code, 0505.

Probably a MAF, smae thing happened to me, no code, then a week later after it acted as you staed, threw the maf code.

when you turn the car "on" w/o starting it, and all the lights on the dash lights up and stay lite untill you start the car ... does the check engine light light up there too?

If I recall correctly, code 0505 is a general code that something is wrong, but not something that has a sensor. I pulled a 0505 when I blew my engine. My car was only running on 5 cylinders for a while, and it was because I messed up a ring around a piston. I have also heard that is the code you will get if a spark plug stops working. Good luck, but I don't know. There are too many variables at this point. If your car is idling rough, start unplugging injectors 1 at a time, and see if when you unplug one, nothing happens. That will lead you to a cylinder that isn't firing. It sounds like your car is "missing". Does your car shake a little at idle, but smooth out a bit when you drive it?

According to Maxima FSM manual code 0505 indicates no failure detected.

0505 is a good code trust me.....i had a evap problem after reseting the cpu thats when got 0505 it just means that the codes are clear.....if there is a problem, the code will come back and -trust me it will haunt u

you didn't turn the ECU screw back to the correct position after checking your codes. when your car is in diagnostic mode, the idle will be low, rough, and the car might even stall. sound familiar?

check the screw on the ECU, put it back to how it was before you pulled the codes, and your car should be fine.

0505 means no problems all is good (as far as what the ECU monitors)

I just hope you didn't force the diagnostic screw past the stop point, I'd think it would be kind of hard to do, but still.

Sounds very familiar. This morning I decided to check and see if that was the problem and it looks like it most likely was. I was using a long screw driver and the gas pedal was in the way so I thought I had put it all the way back counterclockwise but apparently it wasn't. I put it back completely counterclockwise and it has been fine today. Thanks everybody for your help.
